Any 10/12" travel set without a jerkish kinght?

PolygonEater

Hi there, Im looking to buy my first chess set and I wanted something that I could carry anywhere, made of wood and that wasn't too expensive.

Ive seen tons of foldable set from CB and the likes of it but all of them have that terrible knight design... The only one I found with a decent design was from house of chess but they don't deliver to Brazil.

Any ideas? Or Im asking for too much? Thanks

Have you tried to buy from House of Chess through their "Pleasant Times" outlet on Etsy?

Yeah, Ive contacted them but they don't deliver to my country (Brazil). Any other option?

I don't know your price range and these may be a little small but I've always liked the looks of the sets from The ChessMate.

This isn't a bad set - I don't know your price range though.

It was also available with a canvas bag - some of those (like mine) had wood pieces and some had plastic pieces which were apparently pretty cheaply made,

I always thought those wooden Drueke knights were ugly.  But YMMV.

PolygonEater

@Gomer Those fall within my budget but the knights are exactly like CB foldable sets, but thanks anyway!

@Natty Wow that is really something, seems like a great vintage set! Just have to try to work on the shipping charges cuz it's greater then the set itself lol.. Thanks allot

If you are wanting to get away from those German Knight style of travel sets. Good luck especially at the 10/12 inch travel sets. You may want to go up in size but yet small enough to travel easy. Since you tried House of Chess. I am not going to give you that info. You may want to buy a small wooden set and then a folding storage chessboard that has squares big enough to fit your pieces properly.

Here is a nice Bridled Knight set.

Not sure if this board would fit the set I linked you to but it might. I did this with a small set I got. I just threw away the trashy pieces that came with the board.

Hope this helps you. I would suggest going slightly bigger if you want a better looking Knight for a travel set.

You might want to poke around here:

I have gotten some nice plastic sets here cheaply - I don't know how their shipping to Brazil is - shipping to the us is usually free (or very cheap) - but that has more to do with China's and the US shipping agreements.  The search engine is kinda of clumsy so you often wind up with really large search results.  If nothing else you could buy a cheap set to use until you find something you really like.

@KnightsForkCafe Thanks, that is great advice! I started considering that option as well since I've been scaning litteraly thousands of sets on most online websites (ebay, etsy and others) for one that I could settle and its mostly been that terrible Knight from modern travel sets or vintage soviet ones which I kinda don't like as well (the nice ones are really expensive).

The sets I really liked, the one from House of Chess and the Duerke unfortunely had the same problem, shipping. HoC doesnt ship to Brazil and the Duerke had a shipping cost of twice the price of the set and the seller could do nothing about it.

When considering making my own composition I found a 2,6" set from CB that has a pretty decent price and great design. This has been the smallest set I could find with nice design. I've now started to hunt for the appropriate board and started considering other board designs as well, like flat foldable or sliding top/drawer (even though I don't know how portable these actually are)! I think I need a board with at least 1,4" squares, which means going over the 10/12" size I initially intended.

@NattyBumppo Thanks mate, Ill check that link!

Thanks everyone for the help!

There are roll up leather boards out there that might work well for you as well.

Following up on the idea to make my own combination what do you guys think about these pieces on this board (12"/1,25" squares)? Do you think the board size is suficient or the pieces will be cramped? I've seen somewhere that the King's base in this set is actually 1,14" not 1,2" but I'm not sure about that.

I initially wanted a 10" set, now getting to a 12/14" seems like a big jump in size lol

KnightsForkCafe

@PolygonEaster Seems like the base size of the pieces is too big for that board you liked to. I would go with a board with 1 1/2" squares for that set you linked to. Here is a 13.5" board.
