Chavet set?

How do you determine whether a set is an original Chavet set from 40 to 50 years ago? Particularly if there is no box. Does it affect the value if there is no original box?

It's tough to determine the exact year alright. Mine is exactly from 1970 because the owner I bought it from had left a note in the box, Paris in 1970 on special occasion written on it..

But you can have an indication of the era like mister MCH describes in post 96.

What era do you think the Chavet set above is? #99 post

Seeing the low crenellation of the rook and the flush forehead from the ears, I'd say that's the early version of the current design size 5. As of era? I'm not sure yet when they started that design, my guess is around 2000?

Lol I think that's the picture I saw, a Chavet with glasseyed knight!

Could you please tell me the story about that glass eyes? As for the box, mine is also the same box exactly like yours, also no label.

I think that set is the 90 mm set on eBay. If so the queen has a nipple so I would agree with Michael on the age being around 2000s.

Do you still have the set?

Thanks for the information. Very helpful.

Haha you sure you have nothing to sell? wink.png

The knight without manes my guess it's from before 1970...probably around 1940-60

@TheOneCalledMichael: you may right, it is possible that original owner might put the glass eyes on his own because it was pretty bad done!

And you're right our set have some slight but significant differences!

@MCH818: thank a lot for all these explanations, it's very kind and good to know!

@Bamboo58: according to TheOneCalledMichael, my set shown in #91 is a 70s set.
And to my point of view, I would say that the set in #99 is from the 2000s.

Well...  The picture is fresh happy.png . I believe it was a birthday gift from my parents around 1984/85.  Guess they were just bought as is... with the glass eyes. The box only indicates, that it is made in Germany. Western Germany that must be happy.png. I've had them in my basement for many years. Brought them out again, when I picked up chess again some years ago.  Honestly,  I found them a bit boring initially... The German knight and the feminine rooks. So I've upgraded to a Dubrovnik set recently. I was a bit surprised to realise, there is actually a demand for this design happy.png.

The king is a little taller than 80mm. They came with a 50mm board.

Merci !
sure, nothing to sell 😇😜 but, if I catch a B212 or/and a B210, I change my mind.

Also, I wanted to show that the green one was a Chavet for Weible

TheOneCalledMichael

That's a cool story thanks mister! Since there are at least 2 sets out there with glass eyes, I think there is some localized distributor in Germany selling those. This is so cool, piece by piece we're discovering the history of Chavet happy.png

Edit: it's not German knight, the fact it's ebonized I think it's an export product for Germany in this case, at least that's the impression I get.

I have the same knight without mane, also the same queen. I've found several ebay seller who had sold that exact set and their description all are saying it's from around 1940. So for now I'm making an assumption that set is from the 1940 era.

Someone has been trying to sell a 3.5" (90mm) green Chavet on eBay for months now without any luck. Is your green Chavet set a recent purchase? Can you provide any background on it? The seller thinks it might have been a set sold at Harrods. Which would explain the green color.

Yes, the purchase is recent, but not from ebay. I bought it from an individual in Germany who had owned it for 45 years.

It's so easy to slip any game into a box, not necessarily the original one. My box has three slots: one for white, one for "green", a last for 24 pawns, also green and white. (look at #108 picture 6-> logo Weible size st4).

I have no idea if this green is original. Sometimes I tell myself that the patina used at the time may have been of poor quality, and that over time, what was a walnut color, took on this greenish tint ;-)

That's cool! Thanks for the photos. I have only ever seen one green one which is the one from eBay which @Pawnerai already mentioned.

Welcome! There isn't an official timeline for the variations in Chavet sets so it is good to share ideas.

Wow! That's a nice one. Do you know its origin or how it became stained red?
