Need some help!!  I am helping teach chess at our elementary school.  I am curious if anyone has an idea of a software program that I can easily setup diagrams and be able to move pieces around freely.  I will be showing this on a projector.  Please, any help would be awesome!!!!

I'm not sure I can help you, but I'm also not sure I understand your request entirely. You don't need help with the projection end of it, do you? (idk anything about that.) I mean, all you need is a chess program that displays on a PC monitor, right?

Also, I'm not sure what you mean about being able to move the pieces around freely. Will there always be both kings on the board, and will you always be making legal game moves, or do you also want to make illegal moves? (If it's the latter case, I only know of two programs that will allow that.)

I only need a program.  as foor the moving freely, If i had a board with pieces setup, I would like to show all the places that a knight could move too and then move the piece back to its original square.  basically once i have the board up I would like to move any peice around as much as I want ignoring the rules of chess.

As long as you plan to always have at least two kings on the board and only make legal moves, just about any chess GUI (graphical user interface) program will work. Otherwise, I'm only aware that Arena and Winboard will allow illegal moves, etc. I'm less familiar with Winboard, so you might want to try out Arena to see if it works for you.

The Winboard 4.8.0 installer can be downloaded from here:

The Arena home page:

The Arena 3.5 setup file can be downloaded here:

Once you have Arena installed, I can help you configure it for the right settings and the look you want. You can have it look more or less like the image on the Arena home page, or you can close all of the extraneous windows so that only the board and the navigation bar are present (like this):

To everyone who has sent me help, thank you!!!  but I believe I have a great website that does everything I need it to do!!!  If you are teaching chess to a group of people this website is a must to use.  You can move pieces around freely! you can color squars red, green, or yellow!!  you can also use the same colors with directional arrows.  the web site is http://chessmicrobase.com/

Please check this site out!!!  really cool features..  oh and it is free up to 100 games....

Neat site, I bookmarked for later.

Can you make the dark squares something other than light grey?

I do not see where you can change the style of the board or pieces at this time.  But I am using the free version.  I do not know what the pay version may offer.
