Chessbazaar Dubrovnik-Fischer Set 3.0 Version (lacquered natural & crimson boxwood)

sound67

Just received the new 3.0 version of the CB Dubrovnik set (my first Chessbazaar order in months), and it's a significant improvement over the first two. I went for the glossy lacquered crimson boxwood version, because that just appeals to me the most. Here are some impressions:

The set feels very well balanced in weight (total weight is 1.2kg; the bud rosewood version is the only substantially heavier one (+300g).

The style of the knights marks the most significant improvement over the earlier versions.

Balls on the bishops are properly centered:

If I had a comment, it would be that the gloss could have been applied yet more finely, but it's not a major concern, particularly for the price. I might still be tempted to pick up Staunton Castle's antiqued version, which is twice as expensive but from the photos (and my previous experience with the company) seems finer still. Shipping went extremely quickly this time: ordered Saturday, shipped the same day, arrived in Germany on Monday. No customs charges.

Beautiful set @sound67

Thanks for the detailed pics.

Don't like it. Set looks much better and more authentic on chessbazaar photos.

To each their own.

there's always a buzz kill on this forum

I'm not so into the gloss, but it's a beautiful set!

Nice. What's the square size on the pictures?

sound67

55mm. They would fit on a 50mm board, too.

A bit too much shine for me but I do like the looks of the set. I think that I will get the Sheesham version. Mainly due to that was the same color of wood Bobby had with his.

If you want to remove the shine, just spray a flat(matte) clear spray. I use this:

Awesome purchase. A quick poll, which Dubrovnik you will vote for?

HOS: https://bit.ly/36JwqXO

TCS: https://bit.ly/32ZpJ32

NOJ is from a different league, so I'm not considering it. No offense to the NOJ buyers, but it will be comparing Rolls-Royce with Fords and GMs. grin.png

The last one is the Staunton Castle, right? It's still the best of those, but the new CB is easily better than the HoS, and the one from TCS is on the level of the previous CB version, but overpriced.

There are two versions of Dubrovnik available from HOS: old version and new version. The old version has 3.75" king. The new version has 3.625" king and IMHO appears to be an accurate copy of the original Dubrovnik that Bobby Fischer owned.

Oops! Forget to mention Staunton Castle. Yes it is. IMHO, the most value for money is CB and HOS. The chess store and HOS's Dubs are quite similar. I really didn't like fake antiquing and I'd rather want my boxwood to age with me. My Indian rosewood in custom order is in production and will soon be shipped.

Is the ChessBazaar set posted by @ manfred_scriba_ms07 really as orange as it looks in the pictures?

The Staunton Castle 1950 set is my choice. Along with the Noj, it's the most accurate, and personally, I think it has the best-looking knights of all the sets.

The knights from The Staunton Castle are really nice / the chess bazaar is not that bad for the price , like the shape of the pawns/ rook /queen/ bishop / king / better ,

mind you am going on the photos ? because that all we can do when it comes to the Dubrovnik .

How often does HoS refresh their stock? I'd looooove to pick up a set of the anjan and natural, but it's not available at the moment.
