Glass Eyed Lardy set update ...

Hi All - Just received the set and it's a 3.75" King not 4" like the seller stated. But I don't mind at all for $80 LOL. It is in like new condition and around 50 years old happy.png . The Olive wood grain is amazing. And the original lacquer gives the rosewood a deep blood red color. I think the set fits better on the 2.25" square Drueke table being this size anyway. A later oiled version  on a site went for $395 so I can't complain lol Cheers -Ron

Outstanding score Ron. I still have been keeping my eye out for the illusive 4". I scored my 3 3/4 set a year ago for 100 and that was a bargain. Out of all the sets I own it is still my favorite.

I would post a pic but I guess being new I cant.

That board fits perfect.

Beautiful set. It looks almost new. I actually think it suits this board perfectly given the slightly chunky nature of the pieces (personal preference obviously 😊).

This one was on etsy and it was the seller's first sale. Not too aware of the prices these go for I guess LOL. Being retired helps. I can now keep my own hours and search when I want . Good Luck

Thanks. I agree. I could put them on my 2" square DGT board but a like a little extra room myself. Those  chunky knights are definitely at home here  .

That's a very nice set, Ronbo710! It reminds me of when I was aged 10 and had only played chess for about a year or so. In the local bookshop they sold a set exactly like this one, and I remember pining badly for it. I thought it was so beautiful, but it was way beyond the means of a schoolboy of 10, obviously, and I felt it was way too expensive to ask my parents for it for Christmas.

Thanks  . Yes I always liked these glass eyed knights. But I wanted to wait to find a really nice example. There were some made in Germany but I really prefer the Kings in this set to theirs. Remind me of the Chavet Kings

.

The German ones are not as defined as the French Lardys that I have ran across. I also find the larger French sets like 3.5 and 3.75 Kings come more with the lacquer coatings and they tend to be in better condition . The wood grain really stands out and the wood does not darken over time. Also less leaners.

By the way Ron I have only stumbled across 3 3.75 sets like yours when collecting Lardys. Yours , mine and one at a auction. They are as elusive as the large Chavets.

That's great to hear  . I am wondering if the lean might be a boxwood issue primarily. I collect Soviet era sets from Russia and Ukraine and not one has this "lean" issue.

Just an observation but you may be right  about the boxwood. My guess that Lardy was cranking out so many sets that some wood was not cured completely.

That's interesting are they 3.75? Can you post pics of the kings on both. I have found that the kings on Lardy sets have the most variance in the shape of the kings crown and cross. Not counting the major differences in the Knights.

The powers that be wont let me post pics of mine being a fledgling on this site.

Great looking pieces. The chunkiness is reallly something. I'm intrigued by the individual boxes for the pieces. Are they original to the Lardy's?

Thanks. I think the packaging was a a Cavalier addition. I also found in the June 1967 issue of Chess Review an ad from Cavalier for this same set. It was #1466 in their catalog.  But here is an identical set with a different style of boxing. ... https://chessantiques.com/product/french-glass-eyed-lardy-chessmen/

That's the same box mine came in on Franks site.  Its faux leather. It is the same case I have seen other sets sold by Lowe came in. Do you have the  67 ad Ron?
