Good Plastic Set for 2.5" Squares

SquidDr

Hey all -

My brother just picked up a 2.5" square giant Drueke chess table (the 30" x 30" one) for $75. Naturally, I'm insanely jealous but it's ok... Anyway. He doesn't have any pieces big enough for it. Now, I'm not about to part with my 4.25" lardy set, but I'd like to get him some pieces. Thinking something quality and plastic and new..

What's the best option for plastic weighted felted chessmen for 2.5" squares out there?

Thanks!

Squid

Thanks - looks like the Collector Series 4" ...

No, not that one. I wrote those comments and was disappointed by the quality of the Collector's set. The design is beautiful, but there were plenty of problems with my set. The glossy Premier Set I found much better, and I've grown fonder of it still since then.

If your expectations with the plastic set is that of the wooden, then you will certainly be disappointed. I chose a professional chess set from the chess store a couple of years ago and was okay with the quality. It's a good weighted chessmen.

I think that's the same as the Premier set from Wholesalechess.

There seems to be some difference and that TCS price is $2 cheap.

The design looks exactly the same though. Prices vary of course.

Also, you could opt for the most stylish contemporary plastic set, the Alegria Staunton. It's more expensive, but beautifully designed and very well weighted. It's actually intended for 2.25" boards, but it could work on a 2.5" board, too. This is the Alegria set on a 2.36" (60mm) board.

Beautiful! From where did you get this board from?

This set was once sold by the Chess store at a price point of $49.95. It's called the Zukert plastic set 4.25" King, massive set BTW.  It cannot be found anywhere but this website. There are various color combinations available but almost at $10 more for asking. It is a massive set. I had bought it on special with a 5 color combination back in 2013 with an extra half set to complete 3 full sets. It would fit nicely on a 2.5" playing square. The knights are stout as with the rest of the set. The link as follows:

Images of the Zukert set below in both Red and Camel and Black and Camel, respectively.

P.S. - The King's base is 1  15/16".

To give you a better perspective of how these sets look on a 2.5" board, I've arranged the light army of 3 sets from smallest to largest.

Here they are as a group they are:

The Collector's series from HOS 4.0" King  Camel color

The Professional series-Various vendors (aka Premier, Quadruple, Fischer Series, etc.) 4.O" King Natural color

The Zukert Series-originally from the Chess store now available from Homegoodscenter.com 4.25: King Camel Color.

Here are the 3 sets in one shot

The Collector's set:

The Professional set:

The Zukert set:

Just to give you an idea of how they would appear on a 2.5" board. FYI.

Unfortunately, it appears every single one of their chess sets is out of stock: https://www.homegoodscenter.com/search?q=Plastic*+chess*

They were extremly popular and quite nicely crafted some years ago. I thought that at least one maybe two were available but when certain sets get a google search and it's found they don't last long especially if they've stopped producing them for some years now. I thought ebay would have some owners who would like to sell off some of their inventory and perhaps have this set in their sales window. One has to continue to search for what they truly desire I would guess...

I think that a plastic set for a wooden board or table is cheap. Many better options out there for a wooden set. However if you want a plastic set. I would recommend the faux wooden plastic Nero set from bestchessset.com That way you can still have a wooden look but in plastic form.

But then you're  approaching US$100, and for a wooden set that would fit 2.5" squares that's not a lot of money. One option which would fit nicely and is about $100 (incl. the 30% discount at the moment) would be something like this:

https://www.chessbazaar.com/the-collector-series-hand-crafted-wooden-club-chess-pieces-in-sheesham-box-wood-4-8-king.html

A 4.8" king size set with a 1.9" base. With the discount it's slightly above 100, shipping included. But that's far above the price of a Premier plastic set, which is also nice.

The board is from this German eBay shop: https://www.ebay.de/sch/isostar756/m.html?_trksid=p3692

If you are looking for a nice set that will fit the set, you would be looking for something with a minimum of a 2" base on the king.  There are many sets in the 4" king with a 1.85" or bigger base that you can get for $24.95 plus shipping from many vendors, including me.  Personally,  I would recommend the https://amchesseq.com/collections/premium-chess-pieces/products/41542?variant=7213046038586 It is a nice set and looks super expensive, but is $99 plus shipping.  If you want something a little less expensive, you might want to try https://amchesseq.com/products/we-games-super-tournament-staunton-chessmen-triple-weighted-black-cream-plastic-set-with-4-in-king?_pos=1&_sid=7e5457718&_ss=r&variant=7220351991866 which is $17.95 plus shipping.

thanks

Americans are at a disadvantage here. The same material/design quality is avaiable in Europe for half the money, just in different colors (beige and imitation rosewood): https://www.connexxion24.com/Klassik-Brettspiele/Schach/Schachfiguren/Schachfiguren-Aurelius-KH-110-mm-Kunststoff-gewichtet::9480.html?refID=94511215

It's certainly a very nicd, very heavily weightdd set, but I prefer the classic Staunton style of the Alegria and Premier sets.

Instead of that set recommended by Shelby, my sights are set what will be soon in the pipeline for purchase. The new metal and off whte and black plastic injection encapsulated Ultimates. I will have my metal set powder coated to give the pieces a matte finish and knock off that shiny metal appearance. My choices for powder coating if available will be an antique Copper and Satin Gold.

The recent iteration of the Ultimates, the disputed color by many, not I...

The new metal Ultimate set I will obtain and powder coat when available for purchase.

These are the two matte powder coat finishes I plan to have applied on the metal set.

The new white Ultimates I will obtain 2 sets of this new offering.
