Got a great set at last for free 'Secret Santa' came early !

Got an early present today, from a great guy and a true gentleman: And at last I own the 'Ultimate Chess Set Pieces'.

You can get many great wooden pieces here in the UK like Staunton, fine repos of Dubronik, Chavets, Lardy's etc. But these beauties are very rare in the UK and I have yet to see anyone from the UK post pics of them on this forum. I believe the shipping can cost up to three times the cost of the pieces.

I know you guys are probably like "Wtf dude, I was expecting to see an amazing wooden Staunton or a beautiful French Lardy or even a fine copy of Fischers Dubrovnik. You're going nuts over a PLASTIC set that was flooded here in the USA years ago? Dude get a grip man !!!!"

But guys, you CANNOT get these LEGENDARY pieces in England from a retailer. No chess retailers in the UK take plastic pieces like these (and others that my buddy's on here own) seriously. Shame on these retailers. Please bear this in mind before you urinate all over my beautiful BBQ.

It is a very elegant set. If it gives you joy, who cares what anyone thinks?

Also, it looks like they are weighted, which makes a big difference in the feel.

My best chess set is similar to yours in shape, but wooden. It is the Judit Polgar Chess set. I spent a little over $200 to get it, but it was worth it.

I could not afford the board, so I just bought the pieces and bought another wooden board separately. Just as good.

but not the pieces. I have seen that board before it's a none electric DGT, I like the DGT boards.

I like the set and board! The most important thing is that the set is weighted.  I am using simple chess pieces in my chess course.  They are weighted,  but not heavy enough.  As I am used to double or triple weighted pieces I have problems to handle the pieces. I have to buy new sets.

I personally loathe the Ultimate Chess Set, but I’m glad you’re happy with yours. The board looks very nice in the photos. Congrats!

Congrats, @theendgame3. I don't have an original plastic Ultimate set yet, only a wooden repro from CB. Though the pieces on the Excalibur Grandmaster are essentially the same style.

Hey, they look great from where I'm sitting and I'll bet even better from where you're sitting. Very nice, thanks for sharing.

theendgame3,

The Ultimate is one of the classic plastic chess sets. And it looks great on your board.

I've had the original version for over 15 years and would be tempted to pick up the newest version if I didn't already own the yellow "Butterball" set and a very nice wooden version I got from the Rochester Chess Center for only $99 (it's more expensive now).

Three sets is neurotic, I know, but four would be pathological! Overly redundant? Not really, because each set plays on a different size chessboard. The original fits a 2" board, the wooden version a 2.125" board, and the Butterball on a 2.25" board. So as not to get them confused, each set is stored in its own tournament bag with matching vinyl board. When it's time to play, I simply 'grab and go.'

always good when you finally track down something you've wanted for a long time, congratulations

Looks great.  Congratulations.  Currently have a set on pre-order --- your pictures have me excited.

It’s a nice set, I hope you enjoy it.

Cool I like it when Secret Santa gives gifts that you are wanting. Looking forward to getting the new 3.0 plastic version.

I can feel the excitement in your post. It’s great when you get something you covet. Well played by Secret Santa 😉and you’ll enjoy it for years to come for sure. 👍

The set looks completely fine to me, though I don't own any plastic set, other than 2 mini travel sets......but....There is "nothing" like finding a rarity and the satisfaction of owning something so hard to get is worth it's weight in gold.....Nice score!

A classic set, I hope it brings you many years of enjoyment & in the process you get the chance to make some good moves with it!

Congratulations. I have this same set and it handles so well. I love using it for blitz play.  However Im a bit puzzled about one thing. Did you put King Side stamps on the pieces?

MCH818

Congrats! I am happy for you. It feels good to get something that is hard to find.
