Millennium King Performance Chess Computer: First Impressions (to be continued)

That’s really frustrating as even with a USB Bluetooth adapter such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mpow-Bluetooth-Transmitter-Receiver-Supports/dp/B06XPCVB4F it is not going to work with the PC apps (Unless the Microsoft Store has a Hiarcs app for windows phone that would run on PC - which I seriously doubt).

I am interested to know if the Chess Link Module draws power through the USB lead from the PC or Laptop (including a USB 3 port) or if one still has to plug in the power adapter?

The ChessLink needs a power adapter.

I think it has more to do with the CL not using a standard BL connection for Windows.  Since Hiarcs works on all of those other platforms, it is not a serious drawback at this point.

And since Millenium has a public API, i think it will be a matter of time before they or a developer gets it working with Hiarcs (and Lichess, chess.com, etc).

If I were king for a day, here is what I would change:

- Bluetooth and WiFi would be inherent in the computer, eliminating the need for an external box
- the computer would have an up-to-date USB port
- the computer would have the ability to run on battery vice mains

Otherwise I am happy with my unit; I do look forward to the day when a code warrior has figured out a way for me to easily use it to mirror games with online sites like this one or ICC.

Don't count on it though. The ChessLink has been on the market for a few years, and nothing has been done yet to connect it to Windows apps.

If I were King for a day I would have had all three (DGT, SquareOff and Millennium) using the same communications instruction set (or whatever it is called - in the old days it was called a “Hand Shake”). Instructions for LEDs would be ignored by DGT since it does not have any and instructions for moving the pieces on SquareOff are (presumably) handled by the machine itself.

If I recall correctly, DGT were first off the mark when the chess computer scene died out and second on the scene for external communications (Novag being the first). So I suspect that Millennium and SquareOff did not make their systems compatible with DGT’s because DGT had put a patent on their protocol and wanted payment for its use.

The DGT LiveChess API has a browser-based interface. So it is was more or less easy to include it at chess.com and it works perfect. The ChessLink API don't have this feature as far I know and it will be difficult to find someone to program it for free. Sometimes you just have to invest money to get there. ;-)

Aside Chess House and Millennium’s own website, are there any other English speaking videos for this computer out there - preferably on YouTube?

Thanks.

No.

I've not noticed this with another set that is about the same weight as original.  Are your replacement pieces heavier than original?

sound67

The original set that comes with the unit is a little over 300g, the ones I now use (the 3.1" Pro Staunton from RCM) are almost three times as heavy, and I have to exert very little pressure. But mostly, I'm using my fingertips to operate the sensors to avoid long term damage to the board.

Nice collection.  What are the other boards?
