Monday Night's Set--House of Staunton's New "Bohemian" Chessmen
Monday night's set-up. House of Staunton's new "Bohemian" chessmen, Rechapados Ferrer board, Ruhla Garde clock. My friend Phil, himself a collector of vintage and reproduction sets, and I decided to test out the review copy Shawn Sullivan had sent me. The kings measured about 3.85", and the pieces were heavily weighted. We found the pieces to play very well, look good on the board, and to be very well-crafted. We found them to be a good reproduction of the Dragon Knight pieces marketed by Bohemia in the fifties, but made more playable by enlarging them a bit and giving them extra weight.
Chuck, You post pictures of exquisite sets.
Most of us sit and drool over them.
Along with the extensive history of each set ,You also allude to drinking a beer or, three, during your Friday night sessions.
Sorry about being off topic, but, what is your go-to or preferred beer during those evenings?
And please don't tell us you have a contact in some brewery that gives you beer for review purposes!

Thanks, M6P!
My very favorite is Andechs Vollbier Helles from Munich. My favorite types are Bavarian, Austrian, and Polish lagers, German Pils, and English bitters. I have two fridges well-stocked with them. IPAs and other swill are strictly prohibited.
No, I don't have any working relationships with any brewers. Yet.
CB has this reproduction in their line up. Theirs looks to be a little more refined in detail. Also it cost more than the HoS version.
Thanks for your comment. Would you please elaborate which details you're referring to? Many thanks.
That looks like a good setup (combination of board and pieces). I wouldn't mind playing with that setup. Also, funky though the knights look, I think they also make the set look a bit more fun to play with.
Thanks, Maik. I own an original Bohemia Dragon Knight set from the fifties. The knights indeed are funky, and they're what I love about the set more than anything. The originals are smaller, more delicate, and lighter.
Just comparing pictures of CB and HoS. CB lines look cleaner. The HoS knight looks heftier. Just an observation.
What does "cleaner" mean? And specifically, which lines look "cleaner"? I'm trying to understand what you're saying because I'd like to share it with Shawn Sullivan at House of Staunton, and to deepen my own understanding of chess set design as well.
This is a pic from their site. The kings cross looks a little cockeyed and the top does not match the boxwood king. Just an example I noticed .
I'd have to agree with you that the cross on the Sheesham king does look a bit cocked. Other than that, I don't see a material difference between that king and my boxwood one. I haven't checked the HOS website picture. Thanks for responding to my questions.
I like CB's reproduction more but not the weight nor the cost. HoS I like the price but I don't like that the Bishops don't have opposite colored ball finials and the Rooks are not quite the shape the Bohemia set has. They look a bit similar to the Rooks of the Modern Series.
You know what they say, @cgrau. You can please some of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time. Nice work on this set. I'm not acquiring much, anymore, but I might have to get this one.
LOL, RC. Ain't it the truth!
