Dear Nathan.

your photos certainly do the pieces and the board justice - very beautiful, classic pieces which look very stylish on that board. One would immediately like to play a party!

I know this is a two year old thread, but... having just bought the 3.5" 1972 Fischer-Spassky set from HOS in Anjan and Boxwood, which I really like, I have to give the clear edge to the style and design of your pieces, especially the black.  I have a dozen sets of chessmen, and those are some of the nicest I've seen in that size.  Really like the stamping as well.  I wanted the Fischer-Spassky set just for the fun historical aspect of it, but if I had found this thread first I don't think I would have bought them, LOL!  Anyway, nice score!  Here's a pic of mine, bought for a DGT Centaur board, with foil disks attached to the bottom so the computer recognizes them:

FYI, I don't have closeups of them, but the Knights are very similar, however I have to give a slight edge to the finishing of yours.  You don't say, but I also think your King Base is a bit larger; mine is 1.5", and a 2" board is about as big as I would go.

Dear @Nathan0001,

Thank you for posting pictures of this set on a board. I am currently looking for chess pieces and a chess board (to upgrade from my travel-sized box set), and I was also drawn to this Staunton Castle: Championship series 3.5"  set--but a little bit hesitant as it's still quite a bit of money and there are no pictures of the pieces set-up on a board on the Staunton Castle website. Well, with your pictures, it is almost decided--just the board left to decide on.

So I have some questions regarding the board:

  1. On the 2" board, is your King able to move diagonally between a Bishop and a Queen without issues?
  2. You mention that the set also looks nice on a 2.25" board. Could you please share a picture with us?
  3. And the same for a 2.16" inch board (That is the normal measure for in-between 2" and 2.25", right?)
  4. Lastly, could you please use different board materials if possible? Normally I go for brownish pieces, as they feel a little bit warmer. But this set is just so classy..! What board material would you recommend to give a bit of warmth anyway? Walnut is nice but maybe slightly coldish/greyish, while some Rosewood board I saw where too red for my taste. (It seems to be a difficult balance!)

Many thanks in advance! To Nathan0001 or any person that will weigh in.

P.S. Sorry if I'm asking a lot, but since it's quite expensive I want to get it right. And with these Covid lock-downs I can't exactlyvisit a store to have a look... So thanks again!

My thanks to everyone who posted such appreciative comments!  Somehow I went missing from the Chess.com equipment forums for a very long time; I think it was because of a few trolls making too many people pissed off.  Maybe I'll pop back in now and then. :-)

Hi Aernout_nl! I'm very sorry, but I just saw your comment only now.  Can I ask if you still need the pics you asked for back on Dec. 30th?  Because if so, I will try to get some for you within 24 hours after your answer!

Thank you, MCH818! I still like it, too! :-)

I bought the 3.75" version of these from House of Staunton, which was a big mistake as they were more expensive, the finishing was faulty and HoS service is appalling. (It's not just me that thinks this - see their Facebook reviews). Here's a picture after I revarnished them:

They are good pieces otherwise. The picture shows them on 55mm squares. More pics here:

Dear Nathan,

a very beautiful set of chess pieces and a very nice board, too.

I own several sets by Staunton Castle (antiquated boxwood). On one of them, Mandeep and his crew obviously forgot the "Staunton Castle" stamping at the base of the kings and they also forgot to put the shellac on the pieces - the result is that this particular set looks even more beautiful (the light pieces have a very beautiful honey hue) and the set is probably a "collector´s item" (as stamps are that have a particular and unique "defect")

In my opinion, RPF chess boards are the most beautiful ones of all.

So, I believe you have made an excellent choice!
