Thanks for sharing this with us, interesting interview. Yes, some of us are born with the desire to collect. With me it was exactly the same.

Since I published my book in February, many copies have started their journey all over the world - USA, Canada, Romania, Finland, Australia, Mexico, Slovakia, Switzerland. Sweden, Costa Rica, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Guatemala, India, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Thailand, Italy, New Zealand and Slovenia, to name but a few.
Here is a selection of the positive feedback I have received so far.

In the meantime, the book has also been published in a very attractive hardcover edition, which can also be purchased from me at reduced rates. If you are interested, please contact me at holger.langer@chess-collection.de.

Further, the July 2022 issue of the Chess Collector Magazine featured a very positive review of my book.

Well deserved praise, Holger.

My copy has a prominent position at home to foster discussion (had to put it away for the hurricane ... just in case).

Thanks for your efforts.

I just received my copy and the physical qualities of the book are magnificent. Excellent binding, paper stock, and printing. I am looking forward to reading it.

@Powderdigit - for me you support was very valuable. When you write a book like that in a language which is not your mother tongue, it is extremely helpful to have the kind of help you provided.

That being said, @RSava, I am aware that he is from Australia. I am not sure 100%, but he might have sneaked in some Aussie slang. Cheers, mate!

Holger, are you also collecting pictures depicting chess scenes? I have some. However, look what I found yesterday!

I really enjoy Holger’s book. I dip in and out of it regularly and learn something new each time. I think my recent purchases have been better informed because of it … whether that be recent purchases of vintage Philippines sets, a tribal set or some of my recent Antique French sets. An excellent book. 👍

Wow, what a nice find. Congratulations, Renato! The only ones I have are a few original prints by A. Paul Weber and some smaller prints, inter alia from historical newspapers, which I have on the walls in my combined office/chess study. I particularly like the first one, which is showing Heinrich & Thomas Mann playing chess - the (satirical) title is "Mann gegen Mann".

Nice! I like how you present your set ps at the wall. If I work have a wall free and do the same, I can see already one of my cats walking through the pieces, throwing them down!

I pirchased a copy of the book. Excellent. Well done.

Holger have you thought about writing a sequel? Perhaps a chapter that looks at for example, Staunton variations and another on Dubrovnik chess pieces. Or other twentieth century designs. Or maybe a chaptrr on the various designs used for world championship matches.

This caricature is by Gregor Rabinovitsch.

Thanks for the positive feedback!

As for a potential sequel, I first need some rest and quiet. I spent a significant amount of time on research and writing. It took me the better part of two years followed by editorial work, pictures etc. My wife was very patient and generous during that time. But before I embark on a new project of such dimension, I will spend some time with minor publications only, e.g. articles for the Chess Collector magazine etc.

Holger, I purchased today this game, not chess, but interesting. Perhaps you or someone else in this thread can help me in the identification of the item.

I am afraid I cannot be of any help, Renato. I have not seen this type of game before. Looks interesting, though. And old. Any idea about age and origin?

Firstly - I have no expertise - so this is a guess, at best. I wonder if it’s not a game or if it is a game it’s about plants - maybe the holes in the cards are to hold/store stems … I only say this by googling some of the Latin and noting some of the graphics … something about rejoicing in plants … perhaps. Again, just trying to help - take my thoughts with a grain of salt.

I guess 19th century. The seller didn’t know anything about it. Google didn’t help with the words.

I thought the same. It remained a mystery. Anyway an interview piece. Very heavy. I will google a little bit more today.
