I like Fundamental Chess Openings (aka FCO) by Paul van der Sterren. It's a fairly comprehensive overview, but not at all in depth (as you'd expect).

Mr-Endron - Do you believe the only reason to buy chess books is for intensive training? I think that's a rather narrow view.
