Opinion needed on color combination

Ah yes, I've read somewhere in a thread about your board what you made back then. Can't find that post again, would you mind post a pic of your board again? Thanks!

Mister Michael, as you requested, the antique board with the Chess Bazaar V3.0 Dubrovnik pieces.

TheOneCalledMichael

Nice mister! Coupled with a Dub set, excellent choice happy.png Is that HoS 3.6 set?

F1Lightning

Mister Michael, no it is a Chess Bazaar V3.0 in sheesham and boxwood.

board vs pieces color....

https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/what-color-board-is-best-for-black-pieces

Discussed also is the important consideration of "contrast" between the pieces and square color.  For example, pieces placed on squares of exactly the same color and hue do not contrast.  Poor contrast results in squares camouflaging the pieces, making visual discrimination of the placement of the pieces and their geometric relationships to one another on the board more difficult.  This is of particular importance in the choice of dark pieces vs the dark squares.

I prefer board #4 - the walnut and maple squares contrast reasonably well with the pieces, similar to a Drueke board.  For the same reason I also like the colors of board No. 5, but the notation puts me off.

Interesting read mister Russel, in particular I recognize a lot in what mister Jaaas said about the european part. In my time I played tournaments and qualifying rounds (this times three as I was also participating in team related competition/tournaments in regular as well speed chess), black and brown was all there was in pieces and boards. Now I think about it, this might explain why I have enough of black color for pieces and prefer any color other then black. This might also explain why I'm interested in green vinyl boards as I can't remember I have ever seen one back then. But the argument I've read green is easy on the eyes, I must say there were days I was playing in 2 days tournament, started early till end of the day playing 3 or 4 matches a day and the black/brown colors didn't bother me at all. So I guess it's what you're used to.

@TheOneCalledMichael

In terms of contrast and being "easy on the eyes", this sky blue color for the dark squares makes, to me, a pleasing choice for a rollup board.....

That's a funny looking combo, I could get used to that after getting over the feeling something feels off wink.png

I think it's funny that you think it's funny looking!  Certainly it is not the color scheme typically seen in a chess board.  But, as the saying goes - different strokes for different folks.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yes that's my point, it's matter of what you're used to. If I grew up playing a lot of green and blue color then I would have find black and brown combo funny.

Mister Michael, the reason they say that green is "easy" on the eyes is that the human eye is most sensetive to the yellow/green wavelengths. So the green will cause less eye strain. And if you want to be seen in a rainstorm, wear a yellow slicker.

I'm curious what you guys preferences are regarding color chessboards when it comes to this pieces, it's SC antiqued color. The chessboards are all 50mm boards. The white balance is fixed afterwards in photoshop so it's as good as it gets the same for all of them.

I'm not quite out yet which one I like the most. What say you?

Edit: All boards are vintage except board nr 4, that's a modern one (walnut). For comparison I added a vintage walnut (board 5) and the difference is obvious to see between new and old.

i prefer the white and black

Santoy

The third one looks outstandingly the best to me .

Wits-end

My vote is for number five, due to the aging of the wood. Love it!

TheOneCalledMichael

That's interesting point mister F1, although it's true but I think playing chess the color of the board is not really that demanding for your eyes to get strain like compared to driving. In fact, when it comes to straining your eyes during driving, I find brown sunglasses give me the most relief for my eyes then my green ones. But we're talking about playing chess indoors, and we are focused on the pieces most of the time if not all the time. Just saying if green really makes that difference then we would have played on green boards during tournaments/competitions as well in Europe.

TheOneCalledMichael

Well the result so far is overwhelming in favor for #4

#1 - 2
#2 - 3
#3 - 4
#4 - 8
#5 - 1

Make that 9 for number 4. A good board needs borders.
Santoy

I voted for 3 purely based on the colour combination which is what was asked for but I would also strongly agree that for a physical board, number 4 with a border is much more desirable.

The truth is… they are all very nice boards and i doubt any of us would turn a single one of them down. Thanks for posting the pictures @TheOneCalled Michael!

The pleasure is all mine mister Wits! Photography is one of my hobbies so all this is good reason for me to get my gears out and use them happy.png
