I'm spending a few days out of my home and I have recovered the first set I made three years ago. It was the first time I turned wood and at that time I knew nothing about models, designs, shapes, etc of the chessmen world. For this reason I made a search of a model to use and the Varese series was the winner so this first set was based on it. After seeing it I'm thinking on make another set, now, with the knowledge acumulated over this three years.
Enjoy the pictures

Ok, the board is ugly, I agree with all of you in advance shock.png

this set came with extra queens wink.png

The woods used are european boxwood, stained cherry wood and one queen made with an unknown wood (more white than boxwood).

Beautiful work!  And I wouldn't want to meet those knights in a dark alley - fierce!

They are only agressive when they're playing a game!!

Beautiful work on the Knights! I especially like the rough unfinished look of the bottom, where it meets the base. Whether it was intentional or not, it reminds me of a Rodin marble sculpture. As if the Knight is emerging from within the wood.

If you've seriously never turned wood before, that set is extraordinary! Great job!

This is the chessboard that i'll make in stainless. the board i've made already.
Any suggestions on the design of the pieces? I have to keep in mind the possibilities of construction.

I found measures of the base diameters and heights online, so I followed those. Its a gift for my girlfriend, so it doesn't need to be perfect, but I'd like some other opinions of it.

Thanks!

Avatar of panosliak

Jacmater Thanks but the whole set is made with a blade knife and sandpapers. Indeed very difficult task.

Avatar of SamiBlue116

Wow, great work with a knife! 👍🏽

SamiBlue116 Thank you.I had only a few cuts to my fingers, but i won't do it with blade knife again for sure.Too hard and riskygrin.png

A hard work for sure, you can make a simple lathe with a drill, take a look on the net, and try to turn your next set. wink.png

let’s cheer up this thread a bit.
A set I finished a few months ago, but never had time to post.
One of the knights (the last made) is a little darker than the other black pieces although I used the same dye but with different proportions cos the original dye was finished with the other black pieces. I f I am inspired in the future i'll replace it.

As ever, european boxwood and stained cherry wood.

This looks incredible. Stunning. Beautiful. Amazing. There are not enough accolades out there to describe your set of handcarved chessmen. I especially love the little finial atop the Bishop mitre. Like a little jewel. The whole set looks so much more refined than the 3-year old set you posted on April 10 (#182). Thank you for posting!
