Hey Guys,

recently I acquired a STAUNTON set with 4” inch kings, no antique set. The horses to me is a state of art, but It’s my first few sets so not sure how’s its craftsmanship compare to other modern or reproduction sets. Cool if you can give your view and maybe rate it 1-10? Cheers!

It says Geoffrey Parker in the box, a bit sad is the white king is slightly chipped in the crown. But I see it as a new set’s battle mark,  though no patination yet. I reckon it will take about 10-20 years to wear some darker-yellowish, or a lifetime.

Yes Frank, the previous owner is not a chess person. It was a corporate gift to them.  I bought the set because The knights are nicely carved, and they are stamped with Kingside crowns. I reckon that must be a mark for quality.. The board and the whole box is so heavy until I got a backache the next day. I checked on the website of Geoffrey Parker and only find their price is rocket high... I am not sure if they are a long standing chess maker though, but the seem to be well known in making backgammon sets

More pics. Could be ebony, haven’t checked the weight though.

Black seem to be ebony.

It looks like a normal Staunton to me, just with a bit more detail (and size).  6/10

Edit: didn't notice the crowns. 7/10

Yes like the crowns too and by the same agree +10%. I don’t know why not all sets incorporate the crown marking, is it difficult to carve?
