Replacement queens for HOS Collector Series?

Sort:

A bit of a weird question.  I have an early House of Staunton Collector Series - now the Collector II.  The set is almost 20 years old.  Over the years, several of the points on the queen's crowns have broken off.  The crowns are very fragile on the early edition.  While the set is still playable, I would like to replace the queens.  I've contacted HOS; no replacement queens are available.

From the pictures, Chess Bazaar's 1849 Staunton Set looks like a pretty close match.  Of course it's hard to tell from the photos.  Although the CB set is reasonably priced, I'd prefer to save some money and just replace the queens.

I'm wondering if anyone knows how well the CB queens would match the HOS?  Or if there's another CB set that might serve as a close match?  Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.

Even if you find queens that match your set by dimensions and design how can you be sure about the colour? You said your set is 20 years old , even if they could send you replacements they might look different than the rest of your set. Think about sending them pieces as speciment to get the right colour match.

Thanks.  The boxwood pieces have definitely yellowed a bit with age.  Hopefully someone will know if any of the chess bazaar sets match.

It would be better if you directly contact CB. Maybe they have a special kind of stain to turn the boxwood pieces aged.

That's the problem with those HS collector set. The queens are pretty ladies but their crown tips very fragile. Same as in the plastic version. I do hope you're able to find replacements and play with set for another twenty years! Keep trying HOS, I'm sure their Indian manufacturer have some around behind an old shelves or something.

Yes, the crown tips are very fragile.  I'm told that the Collector II is a bit more robust.  I've tried HOS twice over the last few years; no luck on either Collector or Collector II.

I suppose I could send CB my queens and have them reproduce something similar with less fragile tips. And as @manfred_scriba_ms07 noted, that would also help with color matching for my aged boxwood.

I'm going through a similar situation. Back around 1996 I bought a Jacques of London 3 1/2" set from USCF. When I received it, it came from House of Staunton, and they included one of their catalogs. I ordered both their 4" and 4 1/2" sets along with three really nice boards. When they came in, the black queen for the 4 1/2" set was cracked. I called Frank and he had me send it back and would send a replacement. I left the pieces all in their little plastic ziplock bags stored in their nice wooden boxes and just kept them stored in a closet. Business took me away from chess for many years, and just recently I got back into it. So I pulled my sets out of the closet and was going to take some pictures of them. And to my horror, when I set the 4 1./2" pieces up, there was no Queen! I've been talking with Josh at HOS for about 8 months now trying to get a replacement. They were in the process of moving around the first of the year. So I waited until I thought they would be established then contacted him again last week. He seemed to think he could find me a replacement. I really hope so. There are a few badly cracked pieces in both HOS sets I'd like to replace as well. Good luck finding a replacement for yours.

Gosh.  That's a sad story.  At least I have queens.  Maybe, I'll try contacting HOS again.  It's been several months since I tried.  I guess you never know when something will turn up.

HOS found a boxwood queen, $25.  Still no ebony one though.  I'm on the fence about getting just the boxwood, though.

I was thinking on contacting them AGAIN and asking about just getting both a boxwood and ebony queen of their current set so they match. At least I'd have a complete set then.

Perhaps HOS has an ebonized queen available?

Unfortunately, they don't offer the collector II series in ebonized finish.

The loose boxwood queens HOS has now are Collector II, which I believe is the current series.

If you just went ahead and swapped out all the queens even those which aren’t broken, the replacements would probably just drop right in with the other pieces. After all, the queens are the only ones with all the points in the crown. It should work.

You could send your queens to Alan Dewey for repair. He also makes replacement pieces.
