Soviet Chess Set Common, but...

Sort:
BurnAmos

My last purchase very cheap! There are a lot of sets like this, but without this elegance, without these shapely necklaces and often with ugly fat Rooks.
A Soviet chess set that is not extraordinary, it is very beautiful.
I love the shape of the pieces, the thickness, and above all, the collars of Kings and Queens, and the equilibrium of the Rooks and his subtle four crenellation, the beautiful Pawns. Good patina, and very good stability of the bases.

A feast for the eyes and a perfect viewing at a chessboard of 5, 5.5 cm.

Again simple, practical design, and aesthetic sense to the service of the chess game.

Yes, this is very nice.

You guys just don't get it. You're going to keep posting these Soviet sets and I am going to get hooked on the simple beauty and elegance of them and I will be forced to buy a set.

Then I will be forced to buy a box to store them in.

Then I will take them out to play and I will realize that NONE of my current boards are truly worthy of the set and none make the set stand out and I will be forced to buy a new board.

Then all of my money for groceries that month will be gone and I will starve.

Thanks.

(BTW, that set is simply gorgeous. There, I am now in love with these sets. I must possess one now. May I ask where you got it from? Do you know if there are any  more?)

I'm becoming more interested in these Soviet sets as well!

That's a BEAUTY !! I am not a fan of the replicas when the real thing can be had for even less. Nice Score BA. For you other guys it is easy to get hooked believe me ...

BurnAmos, that's a beautiful set. It really is. I've been keeping an eye out for one of those, but there is usually a finial missing from one king, or the other, or both. Not to mention the queens. And though they are inexpensive, they are very elegant and they age beautifully. Thanks for sharing.

Now I want one too.

BurnAmos, that set of yours is not as common as one would think. Here is one from the 1960s. Although it is a nice set, notice the difference in detail on the collars and the rooks.

I don't know how I missed this, but this set is exquisite.

The set is a typical representative of a concave base. For this he has a refined form. This design has a rival - convex base. On our forum we can see what kinds of Soviet chess 70-80s are represented more. Fact: the convex base wins by quantity.

Illustration of mini analogs (kings 7.5 / 8cm, pawns 4 / 3.5cm).

These Soviet sets truly do have a certain charm. I got this one recently. It wasn't too expensive and is in lovely condition for being produced in 1983.nullnullnull

@celticduck - Very nice set. I have one very similar that was supposedly made in late 60's.

Can you post a pic of the bottoms of the pieces (the felt side)?

The Etsy seller listed this set as 60s vintage, but 1983 was stamped on a separate cardboard box. I suppose there is no way of knowing for sure if the box and board were sold together. Regardless, it shows little wear except for the felts.null

Rsava

Yeah, mine is almost identical to that one but more wear and tear on it. Different felts also. Mine are a little psychedelic.

Great little set, I like playing with mine even though it is not weighted at all.

As my cats will attest, mine is eminently playable. happy.png You see so many on Etsy, in different condition and pricing all over the map. It's hard to know what to think. For the price I paid, there won't be any buyer's remorse and I can say I have a Soviet set.

Someone on Facebook told me it is Latvian. The Knights look like those in the recent CB Latvian reproduction even if other pieces differ.

Rsava

Yes, I was told mine was Latvian after I bought it also. If you search you will see it is probably so.

Congrats on the set, celticduck. My first original Soviet set was also a Latvian, almost identical to yours. It was also the first of many. Soviet sets can be addicting. happy.png

Rsava different felt is an interesting question. I bought a set, in which all 4 rooks had a lighter shade of felt. When were they replaced? Manufacturer, seller or owner, who knows.

The designs of the bases may differ (see the knight on BurnAmos' photo). But the felt is a last proof of set unity, because glued at last stage of production.
