Toffee apples 😊
Stained, ebonised, painted … wooden chess pieces that are not their natural colour
Question: What to you call a collection of red chess pieces?
Amswer: An Orchard! … an orchard of toffee apples and what a beautiful scene it is. 😆👍
@beachero Holly crap that pops! I can't believe my eyes...I mean I can see the wood grain but can't believe that it's made of wood. Where did that set come from?
@Yenster1 Thanks, it's an antique French set and ooops it's not wood. I didn't do a good job reading the thread title, I saw the red and white sets and thought it was on topic. So nevermind, carry on! I posted some more pics of that set in the post your sets thread.

No offence, but my first thought when I saw it was plastic. My second thought was why HoS didn´t go for those gorgeous colours in their Collectors Series. And my third thought was:
"They give us those nice bright colors They give us the greens of summers Makes you think all the world's A sunny day, oh yeah"

I wonder if back in the day, circa 1900(?), if these colorful pieces would have been more popular with chess clubs had there been Kodachrome pictures in magazines. Maybe various colors would come together like parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.

Nothing for "true" collectors or investors but a nice and cheap set of stained and varnished pieces. Perfectly playable. A good alternative to plastic for the outdoor season.
The varnish reminds me of toffee apples.
