Staunton Castle Dubrovnik and board choices
I am a big fan of vintage boards.
The photo is compliments of @TheOneCalledMichael in his thread about his SC's Dubrovnik set. https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/review-of-staunton-castle-dubrovnik-in-padauk-version. Here is the photo for post 1. The board was made recently by Bill Drueke III but the design is vintage.
I just love this raised frame Jaques style board with SC's vintaged Dubrovnik. The vintage colors of the board go really well with the set. You can see it in the blog at https://www.chess.com/article/view/top-5-historical-chess-set-designs.
My SC Dubrovnik is in padauk color, I have some pics with several different color boards but that won't be helpful for the color combination you're looking for unfortunately.
Great suggestions all around. Curious what people think of this board: https://www.etsy.com/listing/846863341/23-21-bud-rosewood-chess-board-steps?click_key=526859c04ebf5e3e8798040aff4c405881695dd5%3A846863341&click_sum=e6d1a005&ref=shop_home_active_7&pro=1&frs=1
Fancy but I like it! Although somehow I have the feeling it's too fancy for a Dubrovnik set, which is plain and robust design.
I agree with Michael. It looks great with very ornate sets like the one shown in the photo. It may not be as appropriate for a Dubrovnik. But you know what they say... to each their own.
Agree with with @MCH818, to each their own. For me, and please realize this is only one opinion from a non-collector… The high gloss finish is a no-go for me. Perhaps it’s just the photo, but i find the high gloss a distraction, beautiful for sure but hard on the eyes for playing. The frame also appears a bit unfinished, i.e. rough in places. I certainly don’t mind a rougher surface on the frame, but seems out of place with a high gloss finish, better paired with a simple oil/natural finish in my opinion. Okay, enough criticism… if you like it-buy it! Please post pics of the real thing when it arrives, we all enjoy seeing others spend money, errrrr…. Looking at new purchases.
@Wits-end Great observation about the board being shiny. I didn't even notice that. I don't prefer a shiny board either. I like a matte/dull finish much better.
Michael, It was a walnut/maple Drueke style board from the ColoradoWoodWorker. I guess someone really liked it after @KnightsForkCafe posted it.

+1 to these combo’s- I think the boards and pieces are a beautiful match. Classy, timeless. I’d also think of contrasting dark squares - by that I mean not black pieces on black squares … some form of harmonising contrast colours look magnificent. I still like it when I put black pieces on a board with black squares but rosewood on black is just magnificent… at least to my eyes … but of course, each to their own.
I’m very pleased to have received a Staunton Castle Dubrovnik set.
Inspired by this thread with fantastic pictures of different boards with ebony pieces I hoped some Staunton Castle Dubrovnik owners might post some pictures of their sets on different boards to share in one place and help me make a decision on choice of a new board to purchase. Other sets with a similar dark mahogany stain also welcome!
Maple and walnut is probably an obvious choice for contrast but I don’t mind less contrast and am considering the Rechapados Ferrer montgoy palisander and maple board - does anyone have this combination? What is your favourite board to go with this set?
