The Five Knights of Lockdown

You never cease to amaze me with your ability to find great treasures in your area. My purchases these days are 99.9% online finds, which can be great, but not nearly as much fun as finding something in a thrift store or flea market. I can't quite make out the maker, but the made in France is clearly visible. As for that board...simply WOW!. I have been terrible about putting up any of my more recent items up on my Mystery Knights thread. I should try to get a few photos taken and see if I can get them up this week.

Thanks, it’s good fun. I think the brand on the box is Phidias - Made in France.

I am not sure whether they were a distributor or manufacturer or both. My guess is a distributor of lower end Lardy’s perhaps? I’ll guess in the 60’s and 70’s but I really have no clue …. so if anyone can add anything - much appreciated.
Cheers, Mark

I'm really happy for you Powder. It seems your wife has more empathy towards your chess collecting than mine. After all the monies I've spent on chess sets and my other hobbies, my wife will most likely stop cooking for me if I buy another set.

If you knew all of my hobby passions, you'd not blame her. Ha!

Can anyone please help me to find some chess books where war scenarios are described and which can be correlated with chess. If chess notations are also available then it will be cherry on the cake. Thanks a lot.

Hey @VenuBMC - it is probably better to start a new thread so as people can focus on your question without distracting from this thread. I hope that suggestion is ok with you.

Mate - fortunately, this hobby has been cost neutral for me for quite a while now; the fact that I don’t keep all my sets and boards - moving many sets on - means she humours my ongoing addiction. The ones I keep she tends to like too - which helps. 😏

These are beautiful chess pieces - perhaps to play but mainly for display.

I was taken by this light last night on the chess board too… you can see the imperfections in the stain; the perfect imperfections of man.

I hope this brave, white pawn talking to that black Bishop while turning his back to the black king is well protected from afar.

For me, the stain is perfect, wouldn't want it any other way.

While looking at the stain, I wondered what might have been used as the coloring pigments. Then I had a flashback to a movie scene in 'Le violon rouge' ('The red violin') where a masterpiece journeyed through time and countries, lost and found, and lost again. "The perfect imperfections of man".

Classic French pieces on a unique board.

I sometimes saw these pieces from a Dutch company, I just forgot the name. Do the Dutch make their own version of the French style? These knights, maybe? Look at the beautiful set up for a blitz match between Eline Roebers and Erik van den Doel iat the Cafe de Laurierboom, Amsterdam.

That is a beautiful set up and a great vibe with the music and chatter in the background.👍

Lovely set! These types of pieces are indeed very common in the Netherlands (and Belgium). They were imported "en masse" from France (Lardy and in lesser extend from Chavet and possibly other manufacturers) by resellers like Revanche, Homas and others.

More than five knights … mostly French or at least European in origin, I believe.
From left to right the knights are … Lardy, Lardy’ish, 2*Chavet, Chavet’ish, and 3*dogfaces… one being Regence.

This little fella is a one piece knight which is kinda cool for something so small.

Updating the thread with one of my favourites. What I think is a Polish variant on French Regence pieces with a custom polish board - both from the ‘50’s or perhaps a bit earlier.

Very cool pieces. Question on the last set: Is it unweighted? I only ask because it has a patina of age, yet I don't see any sign of hairline cracks which can happen in weighted set, as the metal expands and contracts at different rates than the wood. Either way, I like them. You know me, anything unique catches my eye. thumbup

Avatar of Powderdigit
Yep, unweighted. Albeit the solid bases make the pieces very stable. I will play with this set a lot. I nearly took it to the pub this arvo but alas, we decided no time for chess!
