Free Lessons from New Trainer
Hi boye69. The common wisdom is yes, older players like ourselves have probably reached our plateaus. It does not help that the younger generation is very sharp and just getting better, and ratings are relative. I've decided not to get overly hungup on my rating. I'd like to see it higher, but the most important thing is enjoy and strive to grow. That said, I'd be happy to look at your games and talk with you to see if we could find a way to change the trend. Just because something is infrequent, doesn't mean it's impossible.
Hi Elliot, what's your age? How long have you been playing? How do you like to train? I see some basic things to work on first (threats and material value)
Bret,
What is this 1600 rating based on? Is it your daily game rating? Clarification on this point is probably important for an aspiring chess coach.

Hello ! I'd enjoy some tips to improve at chess (lessons, feedback or just games). Please answer if your offer is still available. Have a good day

I was a USCF tournament player, averaging around 1600 rating in standard time controls.
I'm in school at the moment so thats why i don't respond right away
You're a very new player, and young, so my advice is play a lot and have fun. Tactics training is your first priority. In your games focus on threats, checks. and captures. Try to win material. Career-wise, I'm focused on on other priorities so I really don't have time to train anyone right now.
Hi everyone,
I’ve been following this discussion and noticed that several beginners here are genuinely interested in improving.
I work specifically with players under 1200 and focus on practical improvement — tactics, common mistakes, simple plans, and clear endgame ideas that actually show up in real games. My approach is slow, structured, and easy to apply.
If anyone is looking for guidance, game reviews, or a more consistent improvement plan, feel free to DM me.
I’m open to an introductory session so both sides can see if it’s a good fit.
My name is Bret, I'm a 1600'ish level lifetime player (60 years old) looking to retire and supplement income later, perhaps with chess lessons. I'm a big fan of the Step System as an approach to training, and would use these books to evaluate and progress clients.
I'd love to network with other beginner trainers for mutual support and encourgement, and I'd love to work with anyone interested in working with a trainer who is learing the ropes and offering free services for a couple of hours per week. I believe that strong tactical and visualtion foundations are critical for beginners to develop, and would focus mostly on reviewing games and solving puzzles.
Looking forward to engaging with responses!
