A Good Counter-Play for the Fried Liver?

KeSetoKaiba

Post #16 is right about this being the Traxler Counter Attack. I used to use this against the Italian game; many lines are forced mate, if Black knows theory and White does not. However, I "switched" repertoire choice - because White often gets an advantage with simple measures. Traxler is fun to use sometimes - but I'd hardly call it correct.

Engine says that white's best response against Bxf2+ is actually Kf1.

What about Bxd4?

You mean 5.d4 Bxd4?

In that case, you simply play 6.Nxf7 winning material: The Bxf2+ trick does not work anymore with the c1 bishop open for business.

Ok, interesting...

Speaking of which, mind a bullet game?

any and all debates about the fried liver are my biggest complaints about the audience on chess.com. love the site. but people hear me. no one. and I mean no one that is seriously any good at chess, wastes any time playing or worrying about either side of the fried liver. it is greasy kid stuff. we all play it when we are rated about 1000.

ever heard of the ruy lopez??????

it is time to move on to something serious.

I'm going to pretend I didn't see this comment.

This is NOT the Fried Liver, this is the Traxler Counter Attack. 5.Nxf7 is inferior, much better is 5.Bxf7+

I definitely agree, but this counter-attack is initiated through White playing the Fried Liver.

What if White doesn't take the bait and plays 6. Kf1?

Black then has to play  6. ... Qe7, and even if White does take on h8, I don't know how to continue.

Please someone tell me that 6. Kf1 and 7. Nxf8 is losing for White. Otherwise, I'll never go near the Traxler again.

6.Kf1 is not losing (for either side), and 7.Nxf8 is an illegal move.

5.d4 is a very convincing remedy for the Traxler.

Convinced me, lol.

Sorry, pfren, I meant 7. Nxh8.

My question stands: after

6. Kf1 Qe7

7. Nxh8

is black winning?

Well, what would happen if you don’t accept the bishop sacrifice, then it doesn’t work. I do think that you may have tapped into something interesting though. I think a safer option would be to play e6 before playing the knights out. Then,  when they play ng5 you can play bishop check, and if they block it or move the king, either way you play ba4
