Today we will be looking at the move 5.Bb5+ in the "King's Gambit Accepted: Modern, Abbazia Defense". Let's get started.
5.Bb5+ is the second most commonly played move in this opening. This move is an aggressive one looking to create another weakness in the position with 5...c6. c6 is the only move that keeps black better in this position. White will take the pawn to avoid being uncastled 6.dxc6. 6...Nxc6. Recapturing with the knight is better since it develops a piece. 7.d4 is always played. It is the only central pawn on the board. d4 looks to win the f4 pawn. 7...Bd6 is protecting the f4 pawn. Both players will castle. 8.O-O 8...O-O. In this position, white is still down a pawn, but has a queen side majority. So, the idea for white is to pushed that passed pawn to make a queen. While black has a screwy pawn structure, black has better development in the position, so the chances for black to attack is possible. The idea can be to play Bg4 and perhaps a6. Put the rooks on semi open/open files and begin a kingside attack. White's plan starts with the move c4:
