Do you mean openings named after an european city or nation?

Southernsoldier

Eider one.

bresando

Bizarre question ;) in my blitz repertoire i have only the Italian game. In correspondence i think nothing. This is a bit strange, since most openings are named after european places.

AbelFinkenbinder

The modern.

Dutchday

I played the Spanish (Ruy Lopez) a lot, so I'll take that. The Sicilian of course, and the Dutch. Does Russia still count as Europe? If so I'll add the Leningrad. :P

Whenever I play the King's gambit with black I also like the Abbazia variation.

AbelFinkenbinder

Also, the Marshall Gambit.

Some of my favorite openings when I'm in Europe:

Bonjour, comment vous êtes, je joue aux échecs

Hola, cómo estás, yo juego de ajedrez

Hallo, wie geht es dir, ich spiele Schach

The list goes on...

There are some openings that don't know what country they came from, eg. the Scandinavian Portuguese or the Leningrad Dutch.

Southernsoldier

Danish Gambit?

MountainMatt

Don't forget the Uncommon

MountainMatt

But seriously, the Sicilian

Southernsoldier

Cambridge Springs and Wilkes-Barre are cities in Pennsylvania I believe.

Conquistador

I say most, but not all.  The Wilkes-Barre did come to my mind as well, but it is also known as the Traxler which is Czech-origin yes?

rigamagician

You are probably right.  The Pterodactyl (1.e4 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.Nf3 c5 intending ...Qa5) and Rat (1.d4 d6 2.c4 e5) were given those names in Canada I believe.

Sicilian Defense, French Defense, Petroff Defense (Russian Defense), Spanish Game, Scandanavian Defense, Budapest Gambit, Berlin Defense, Austrian Attack and Vienna Game are all the openings I use with European influences that I can think of off the top of my head... :x
