French Tarrasch c5 question

Looking into this I see the main move in the French Tarrasch c5 variation (queen takes line) is Qd6 when the queen is attacked. Is there any reason why most Gm's prefer this over Qd8? I noticed GM Shankland brought it back to d8 which allows more flexibility to the knight to go to E7. Anyone know why this isn't the main move?
