Good pet line for the Ruy Lopez as black?

Sort:
ForeverHoldYourPiece

I have a decent pet line in the Ruy Lopez as white, but now I need a good one as black. I'm not a fan of the Marshall Gambit or the Chigorin.

What do you guys suggest?

I have a nice pet line as white also haha. Avoids all kinds of stuff, and gets me a fine position with little risk, which is what I like.

I like both Chigorin and Breyer, and they suit my style, too. But sometimes they're a bit dry, so maybe against lower-rated players I would need something else. As for you, to be honest I don't really see 1...e5 as an opening that fits your style. But if you're looking for something active, the Archangel and Neo-Archangel are both very interesting. Schliemann can be fun, too, but you need to know a lot of theory. Finally, I have sometimes played the Open Variation, and the positions I got were often a lot of fun, and probably more up your alley than mine, as I preferred to play something more solid.

If I were to choose a pet line as black in the ruy I would o with the schliemann. It begins on move 3.. so you will get into fairly often, and the lines are compelx enough that experience and preparation should reasonably be converted into higher percentage scores.

That said, the ..d5 lines are trash, definitely go with the more modern Nf6 lines, a la radjabov.

The Schliemann is in fact a drawing weapon.

I play the  steinitz variation sometimes (the old one not the modern). It leads to a solid game with counterplay where black has less space and a worse pawn structure.

Please define counterplay and show us where Black has it after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 d6.

@FHYP Roman Dzindzichashvilli has a video series on it on this site. He asserts that the Steinitz is a legit try for equality, which is maybe fair, but I really don't think it's the type of thing you're looking for.

Try the Cordel defense deferred!

@SilentKnighte5 lol

I really hate all of his lectures, the guy really annoys me for some reason.

The first time I was super annoyed was when he sugested this garbage g6 move in a line in the sicilian where it does not fit at all.

I just hate that he calls himself the world's top "theoretician".

JGambit

lol, He suggests that the french loses by force without showing how. Like a true theoretician.

(Dont get me wrong, I would love if the french lost by force and I do not belive its any good, but I bet it holds a draw, however sketchy it may be.)

The g6 stuff he recommends is actually fine for black. Plus he said the French is playable but he just doesn't like it.

cornbeefhashvili

The Berlin Wall, because you could always incorporate the Fishing Pole (on a whim) at move 4 after white castles.

Which one? The g6 line in the alapin? You can get to the same position through an accelerated dragon move order with 2..g6 c3, which seems to be still played.

lolurspammed

Ah the Steinitz variation..too passive for my taste. The deferred Steinitz however can give you serious trouble!

Is g6 the main line? I've played many games in the Steinitz and I think only one person has ever fianchettoed against me, most people just played Be7 and were solid.

Fish_Ninja

Steer clear of that crap; everyone knows it all; it's memorization.
