my topic says it all. my chess programs have evilly great replies for all the 1.e4 lines i know. any ideas?

You need to be more specific, black has a number of good replies to e4, each of which white has multiple good ways to reply. Most a matter of taste.

Post particular lines you struggle with.

And so your journey down the booked up fish road begins.  Just remember basic opening principles: castle early, develop, and control the center.  Try for closed Sicilians against 1...c5 since they're less theory intensive than open Sicilians, but avoid the 1.e4 2.Nf3 3.Bc4 4.Nc3 5.0-0 trap that many beginners make against the Sicilian.  It's still a playable setup, but hands black a good game as the d5 pawn push (with a preliminary ...e6) isn't that hard to prepare, usually with pawns on d5 and c5 afterward.

Against the four knights you need to break symmetry at an oppertune time and create imbalances (though try avoiding giving your opponent the bishop pair with Bxc6 or Bxf6 if you can help it), especially if you can do a d4 pawn break.

If you are under 1200, you shouldn't be studying opening theory.  You should be studying middlegames and endgames, and the openings should be concepts only.  Develop your minor pieces before your heavy pieces.  Control the center and maintain strongpoints, etc.

For example, after 1.d4, Black should be saying to himself that White has claimed part of the center, and that he needs to claim his part.  1...d5.  Then, White sees the opportunity to attack d5 with 2.c4.  Black should then say that his "strong point" is being attacked, and I must defend it.  However, I need to defend it in such a way that e4 can't be played after a trade.  Therefore, I need to cover d5 with a pawn.  So I need to play either 2...e6 or 2...c6, and continue in this manner until you are at least 1600, if not 1800, and only then study opening theory.

Blitz rates me at 1176 now but in tournaments I'm at 1400 and something so I'm not sure which to follow.

I usually do qh5 if my opponent does e5. Am I playing this wrong?

Ponziani is good for traps and central development if they take d4 and if they play Nxe4 Play bd3 and castle
