Halloween gambit

gambitlover: The test line is ok (except for the last move 20...Rc8?!) but Explorer doesn't think that there is a full compensation. At d=20 (completed), it proposes 20... Nh6 (instead of 20...Rc8?!) with evaluation -1.12.
I always thought Black could just take it and give back a pawn.
However if you don't like that there's the widely known "refutation" 5... Nc6 6.d5 Bb4 giving back the whole piece which must be at least a tiny bit better for Black.
So Black's advantage in the 7... d5 line may not be enough to win against a computer. All I said was I don't expect to see Black lose it. As far as published refutation I didn't say Black was winning there either; I only said it's a tiny bit better for Black. Stockfish on this site does seem to think White is close to equalizing in the continuation you're giving after that.

It's a very risky opening you know. Gambits are always bad.
Umm, isn't the Marshall gambit played at top levels?

GM Markus Raggar 2677 played an interesting line 6...Bb4 giving back the piece and winning very easy.
W: FM Kacper Polor 2228 vs. B: GM Markus Ragger 2677 !.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 Ng6 6.e5 Bb4 { giving back the piece} 7.exf6 Qxf6

That's the real reason of her love.

Bb4 is Schillers recommendation. I dont know the game you mentioned, can you publish it ? I only know the best continuation in this line is 8.Be3 d5 9. g3 c6 10.Bg2 Bf5 11.Qd2 .
Here is the game: European Blitz 2014, Wroclaw, White: Kacper Polok 2228 vs. Markus Ragger 2651
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4 Ng6 6.e5 Bb4 7.exf6 Qxf6 8.Bc4 0-0 9.0-0 Bxc3 10.bxc3 d6 11.Rb1 b6 12.Bd5 Rb8 13.Re1 Bd7 14.Qd3 a5 15.Qg3 Rfe8 16,Bg5 Qf5 17. h4?? Qxd5 0-1
I like your analysis above, looks like white has a solid advantage.

But then again, the explorer also doesn't recommend sacrifices unless there is a direct advantage. It is not even able to calculate the greek gift
