why not play 2.d5 after 1.d4 Nf6 , controlling the center?

By playing d5 you are doing exactly what a hypermodern player wants you to do. You are advancing the pawns without support and thus overextending. That leaves weaknesses behind the pawns to be exploited. That this has happened so early may confuse many players so you will pick up some cheap victories but a player who knows what he is doing will happily punish your premature advance.
