Joined some Tournaments to practice openings.. any tips?

Sort:

I joined a bunch of Tournaments because I want to learn more openings. I hope that by playing them I learn about the variations. But I'll probably get more out of it when I read or watch videos about them as well.

Any tips to get most out of it? Do you know any online resources on one of the openings? Let me know! Thanks!

There's the Game Explorer right here, along with lots of articles you can search for on specific openings. Click on "Learn" to find it and several other resources to help study openings with. You can also find lots of articles by using a search engine, just type in the name of the opening you want to look up.

www.365chess.com has a bigger DB than the Game Explorer here

www.chesscafe.com has lots of archives which inc many articles on various openings written by FMs, IMs and GMs

A book such as Fundamental Chess Openings might be helpful if you feel like splurging on a "general purpose" opening book. Fine's Ideas Behind The Chess Openings is antiquated as far as the theory in it goes but it might be worth looking into and you can get a used copy cheap in VG cond at amazon.

BTW I like thematic tnmts I've created several here and play in them from time to time but I'm not sure entering several at once is a good idea. Lemme know how it works out for you. GOOD LUCK!

I think thematic tournaments are great, although I would personally prefer one round tournaments only for this to have better control when new games will start. Joining groups that plays a specific opening might also be a good idea and if your interested in vote chess you might be interested in these groups (one with a list of all groups playing a specific opening and one with a thematic vote chess tournament where you can join a team if you like)

Even if your not interested in vote chess I bet you could learn from their forums and post games you recently played to get feedback from players playing the same opening.

Thanks, Martin! I think there is plenty to study for now :)

The Vienna Gambit (1. e4 e5 2. f4 Nc6 3. Nc3) games have begun (3 games) and in all 3 I made a different move:
- 3. ... Bc5
- 3. ... d5 (think I had that one from a video, but after exd5 I am already in trouble- shouldve been d6 :/)
- 3. ... exf4 (followed by: 4. Nf3 d6 5. Bc4 Bg4) this seems like a game that is still potentially dangerous for both

(Not asking for advice here, just reporting about first games :) )

For quality I quited two  tournaments (QG throw down and Alekhine). Only 2/3 tournaments started and when I log in there are 13 games waiting. To make sure the games keep some sort of plan I quited the 2 tourneys.

As for now I dont have 1 game in which I am losing terribly! A couple with pressure on me, many undecided and a couple with me on top. Sofar I find the Dutch defense hard to play against with white.

I quitted two tournaments before they started. Each time I log in there are 20+ games to move :) Sofar its going pretty good though: won 5 (+2 mates in two coming) and lost 3. Didnt watch alot of videos or read alot

A nice win with black. Pretty equal in the opening, but at some point I took the advantage and a tactic gave me the win.

, will do some analysing on my openings after the games.

The danger of so many games is that you move to fast. In one game I could not prevent a 3 way fork. So I chose to save the queen and take the NxR trade, but I moved my Queen into the fork again.. fail.
