I really think 5. d4 is totally wrong, in Pfren's game he posted above. White should just play 5. Nf3 and get on with development. Give black the headache about how much expansion he can get away with and don't use up your undermining pawns too quickly. Most of the games we've seen here, white plays an early d4. Coincidentally, they all seem to lose. Why do they do it? Do they do it because they're graded higher than we are so they know they must be right?

I quote Palliser : "Harmless is 5.Nf3", referring a game Lein-Alburt, giving 5...Nc6 followed by e4 as fine for black.

Black is not forced to play e4 in these lines, and can develop smoothly, like in this game. Ok it is a blitz, some mistakes but we cannot say black is unhappy with the opening...

Few game where white plays Nf3, because too slow to attack black centre.>>>

You don't seem to get it. I mean, wtf is Palliser? He's just another GM who happens to support one position and there'll be dozens that disagree with him and maybe think Nf3 is the best move in that position, or for some other reason. Taking the word of one player who doesn't support his beliefs with anything concrete whatsoever is just silly. It stops people thinking for themselves, too.

Hey dude, i didnt only quote Palliser.

I gave an example and ideas to illustrate his point of view that i share.

U can disagree, but no need to be so harsh.

I dont understand your "which is why Palliser is wrong". U give abstract ideas but u know what? Chess is concrete.

U tell "dozens that disagree", how do u know it? No GM ever played in databases the move order u suggest so maybe u understand these positions better than them but really...

U should read yourself and have some hindsight, it could be useful...

OK I apologise for that. My father just died and I was feeling ratty. It's just these constant appeals to authority in the form of GMs, as if nobody else has a mind. What's the point of these discussions if only GMs count; and now you say that no GM ever played 5. Nf3 according to databases. I mean, really, can you expect anyone with any intelligence to believe that?

So it's this constant bombardment of arguments from authority by players with grades 10% higher than one's own that are so frustrating and, dare I say it, ridiculous? Only a small percentage of posts in these forums are intelligent and interesting in any case. It would be good if the better players made better posts to suit and maybe then, the general standard would improve.

Anyway, like I said, I apologise for any over-reaction. happy.png
