Reti opening, advance variation

I’m exploring this opening and finding difficulties when black advances his central pawns.

Especially the advance variation puts pressure and all my moves seem somehow weak, and I didn’t find anything useful about it.

1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4

What is the best move, then?

Personally I prefer 3.e3 c5 (Nc6) 4.b4. But you should know some theory to play it.

Both seems playable to me, as far as I know (not much!)

Still, however, that pawn looks as a pain... I’m actually starting to think it may be better to play straight 2.g3 instead.

Does anybody know some sources where is possible to study the theory for this opening? Possibly free. .:D

If you were to use the moves 1.Nf3 d5 2.c4 d4 then i would use 3. b4 allowing room for a fianchettoed bishop along the a1-h8 file using more of a hypermodern defense which will in term give you more spacial advantage, center control, and gain a tempo while black will focus primarly on protecting his passed pawn.

b4 sounds indeed reasonable

I play 2) g3 but I fail to see the problem in the line given.  Black advances the pawn to d4 and then probably needs to play c5 to maintain it.  Black is the second player and he is overcommitting the pawns and falling behind in development, nevermind opening the long diagonal without a fight.  I would be more than happy with 3) g3 from the first post.

Not sure, I hadn’t played it often yet! Those pawns just seem to give quite a plenty of pressure, but maybe I’m just making the problems only in my mind.

Just want to give this a healthy bump vs starting a new post. 3. g3 feels reasonable,  ANYONE want to speak their mind? THANKS

3. b4, 3. e3 and 3. g3 are both good and most popular moves. happy.png

3.e3 tends to be a bit trappy in blitz if black tries 3...d3?! attempting to bind white's center.  I usually win a lot of games as white after 4.Ne5 Bf5? 5.Qf3! With threats on b7 and f7.
