Reversed Tarrasch

Is this an OK position for White to play or is it just as bad as playing it with Black?

Theoretically equal, it's fine if you're comfortable with it. The extra tempo means something.

Try 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.Nf3 0-0 6.Be2 e5 7.0-0 Nc6 8.d5 Ne7 9.Nd2 Nd7 10.b4 f5
11.f3 Nf6 12.c5

I'm sure this is fine for White but I kinda wanted to avoid having to go 12 moves into theory. grin.png

Wether extra tempos in reversed defences or not matter is DEBATABLE.  Dont oversimplificate things like that.

It is funny how people rubbish the Tarrach, unless you are a GM there nothing wrong with it, even then it playable.

It actually a good defence for club players to play as it can be played against most of whites none e4 first moves, and teaches how to play isolated pawn positions and has good piece play that club players can understand , nothing too abstract

BP, you're right about that but since the Tarrasch Defence is thought to be hard to equalize with, I'm hoping the extra tempo would be enough to ensure that equality.
I'd rather play the Tarrasch with that extra tempo than without.

Sometimes the extra tempo is absolutely no help at all, that's very true.

wondering if white gets ok play with 7.Nxd4 instead? Looks like a Carlsenic happy.png way of playing the position?

7. Nxd4 is a Semi-Tarrasch reversed, also fine. Just a matter of taste. I'd say the more aggressive way of playing is to accept that IQP.

But that White bishop, it belongs on e2 in the Tarrasch!

Horrible for white imo. Black is very slightly better. White shouldn't play an opening that does that.

This is actually also a known but uambitious line from the Caro-Kann:

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. exd5 cxd5 4. c4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6 6. Nf3 Bg7 7. Bd3 O-O 8. O-O
Nc6 leads to exactly the same position. 6.Qb3 or cd would offer White more in this move order.

In the final position given above, after 10...Bg4 I'd rather be Black.

The Tarrasch isn't a reversed opening. Black doesn't need to copy the moves white would make.
