The ruy lopez gives black great attacking chances but is incredibly passive for white.

I think you're really off the mark.

Breyer Variation

Tchigorin Variation

Zaitzev Variation

Open Variation

Exchange and Delayed Exchange Variation

This will keep you busy for the next decade or so.

DrSpudnik

Throw them on the heap too.

By the time you get done with an in-depth Lopez study, you'll be a really good chess player.

(Just don't bother with the Bird Variation 3...Nd4) Laughing

DrSpudnik

I used to play it but got worse and worse results. It's a tough one to play as Black.

thought starting off with the king pawns (or queen pawns) opening and work your way up to the Ruy Lopez would be good.

ltristam

Isi'nt Ruy a good position? I know we talked about it on the first page but the king's pawns are good. And bread and butter.
