what do you think about this repertoire

samuel you are quite radical.

@Ultimate-trashtalker

Exactly what you said. I prefer something that i know I'll get (less options for white against the Caro let's say) rather than the sicilian which is a very good opening but you'll rarely get a familiar position over and over, that you know how to play. So unless you have very good principles and understanding to punish all those "inferior" white set ups against the sicilian I'd prefer something less ambitious but more trustworthy (at least personally).

BILLY_AGAPITIDIS

Also some people here need to chill 😁 they are far far from titled players, and unless you play the ultimate mainlines and main openings (like they think they play), they treat you as a pleb or a noob.

AngryPuffer

thats exactally it

you should play something that you will get more and understand

if you want to spend your life learning about the sicilian then go ahead

AngryPuffer

samuel just seems to like arguing. as if its some passtime of his

I think if u play the Nimzo, then almost 90% of the time u don't get to play it. U have to work with something like the BOGO or QID or the Benoni.... that's what I didn't like about the Nimzo and started to play KID

You could alternate between the NID/QID/Bogo, treating them, together, as a kind of catch-all system.

(Viewing them as a singular, cohesive unit, rather than as three separate defenses.)

AngryPuffer

learning the queens indian can also be very good

just be careful of the kasparov variation

I disagree. I’ve had fun playing the Sicilian and I don’t feel like it’s wasting time. Most people play garbage against me and I get easy wins anyway because Gotham says you can play anything against the Sicilian. I’ve only gotten 2 Open Sicilians and I’ve gotten good games in both of them. I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten better games in the Sicilian, regardless of the Open Sicilian or not, than I’ve ever gotten in the Caro-Kann or the French.

the only variations you really have to learn thoroughly are the Open Sicilian, the Closed Sicilian, the Smith-Morra, and maybe the dubious-ahh Wing Gambit. Everything else is not only simple, but also just worse for white. Regardless of how many setups exist, they’re not theory-heavy until move 30, are they? Quality over quantity.

”oh hey white can play a million different things in the Caro

Yet half of these are just losing for white immediately

What's to be careful of?

(I'm not being snarky - I'm genuinely curious about what danger you're referring to.)

I actually get it surprisingly lot

Even then, if Nf3 I play the QGD

The higher you climb on the ratings ladder, the more White players tend to like going into the Open.

So if you keep climbing upward, you'll have that to look forward to.

That’s good news. Sadly, Sea_Turtle reports always seeing the Bowdler Attack as an 1800, so I might be a bit skeptical of that.

Of course, if I happen to get to master level, I will get a lot of Open Sicilians, unless I match up with GothamChess or something.

Okay, a little bit of a more in-depth repertoire:

No it isn't because the Open Sicilian is the most challenging response and all other responses are less challenging.

What you are saying is basically "It's impractical to play the Sicilian because opponent can play a worse move and you won't know what to do."

Because you just talk like all Sicilian players are dumb and don't know how to play chess against random bad moves.

No I'm not. I'm saying it's ok to play the Sicilian, something completely unradical, and you are radically against it and try desperately to prove why it's bad to play the Sicilian by listing stupid moves.

AngryPuffer

you may rarely see open sicilians and mostly see closed

the closed may give equality, but do you really enjoy playing those dry bowdlers or vienna setup positions my friend?
