What is the best response to 1. e4?

It is a matter of taste. e5 is the most common in practice, followed by c5.
There are a number of other options that aren't really much worse in a practical sense. Most options are playable.

Nearly any opening system is playable at our level. It just depends on which opening line you want to mangle. Just play something that "feels" reasonable.

C5 statistically obviously it really just depends on the players and situation.

What's your question? I just like playing e5 in response to e4 because in OTB games I can't calculate as well. So I avoid playing c5
