I'm not saying the sicilian is better than the french, but imagine your playing in a tournament and you have to win your last game. Would you play the french where white can just play the exchange variation.

Of course black's opening problems are problem but white's in a way too and don't forget white still has the symbolic advantage.

Sicilian is a good opening but not better than French, Caro, modern, Nimzowitch, Alekhine etc.... sicilian is easy to play but it is also vulnerable. If white knows its theory very well, white can get advantage against all variations of sicilian in the open sicilian. White must play the open sicilian but of course that will require extensive study!

Nonsense

I agree with you here, tob1a5.

What does this advantage even mean? Caruana got an advantage in the sicilian against MVL. What does that mean? Nothing, MVL won the game. White is always "better" according to theory but that doesn't matter that much.

I'm not going to lie I like the Pirc and Sicilian.  But the opening sequence from ThrillerFan's 1st game posted is pretty awesome to get the knight in so early but I don't understand why white would push d4 instead of d3 to kick the knight?

The Sicilian is popular because it's a counterattacking defense from move 1, in the standard form White loses his center d-pawn for Black's c-pawn, and if Black can control the d5 square throughout the game he has excellent chances.

Because after 5.d3 Nf6 6.d4 d5, you have a direct transposition to the Exchange French, where White's advantage is ZERO!

Hence why the two main moves are 5.d4 or 5.Nc3.

Less book knowledge for the Sicilian than French?! That's a good one. Haha. Everyone know Sicilian has some of the most theory heavy lines, especially in the Najdorf. I'm much more content in an opening of ideas, like the French, thank you.

Ok I think i see.  Yeh I see Nc3 would be my preference in that position but I am a bit of a nood.  Cheers
