Why Play the Sicilian?

While we're at it, we might as well make a hypermodern group with Pirc, KIA, and KID.

There is already a group for the KID, and I assume you could discuss the KIA there as well. I was thinking of creating a group on the Pirc/Philidor.  Would you like to work with me on that one?  We could use both openings as a focus for the group...

I just can't see a very large following for only the KIA, but I think the group would gladly accept those opening themes into their group.

well go to napoli or rome its a good place there than the sicilian hehehehheeh

The sicilian is no doubt a strong defence for whith against the e4, i have won more games against it as white unlike the french which i dread and do play.

theory alone will get you so far - no matter which well-trodden path you choose

it all boils down to creativity. this is what separates a good book reader from a book writer. ( if you get the pun)

Good explanations, BirdBrain. Good luck with your groups. :)

wow a birdbrain plays chess?

I don't really play, I just toss my pieces in the air and they somehow create checkmates....like a charm.  Still haven't figured it out yet though! :-)

BirdBrain - with regards to your original thread prompt, it doesn't surprise me you didn't find a group for the Najdorf sicilian. I think these are probably the main reasons:

1. The Najdorf is arguably the most flexible choices of sicilians for black with an enormous amount of theory around it. Both positional and very sharp tactical games ensue from it

2. The Dragon is actually a very straightforward sicilian in contrast with the Najdorf. It's highly tactical, with a much more "study-able" body of theory around it and its aim is very attractive: both sides rush the opposing king with scorching pawnstorms and brutal mating attacks, a true "fight fire with fire, no holds barred" approach.

3. The Najdorf is nowhere near as sexy a name as the Dragon. Laughing

BirdsDaWord

Najdorf doesn't make you think of a beautiful woman?  lol...

Personally, I have never dated a Dragon (please don't insert any comments about this) :-).

Yes. The Sicilians have too much theory. But one should always adopt one or 2 just in case you want one for surprise value. Also, the Scheveningen formation always works against most setups by white, the problem is establishing the correct order of moves.

Artspec> Also, the Scheveningen formation always works against most setups by white, the problem is establishing the correct order of moves.

The most common Scheveningen move-order trick seems to be ...a6 before ...e6 to avoid the Keres Attack, or alternatively 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 e6 3 d4 cxd4 4 Nxd4 Nc6 5 Nc3 d6 (followed by ...Nf6) which also avoids some anti-Sicilians. Are there others worth knowing?

(In fact, the Najdorf crowd seems to be split into two warring factions--the "Scheveningen Najdorfs" who always play ...e6 and the "True Najdorfs" who play ...e5 whenver possible and only ...e6 when they have to. Both have super-GMs in their camps.)

i like to play against the sicilian as white because as black attacks down the queenside , white attacks on the kingside where black generally castles

TinLogician

I don't know why.  I never have.
