Which is the worst opening for white?

1. e3

1. a3

1. h3

I'd argue that 1. f3 is the worst. You don't develop a piece, you prevent your kingside knight from reaching it's best square, and you weaken your kingside. The three you listed are wasteful moves to be sure, but 1. f3 wastes a tempo with flare!

f3 or f4, because when I play these I usually lose

I agree with Probaddie 1.f3 is the worst and h3 a close second since it weakens your kingside pawn structure.

As for Two_Dogs, I use 1.f4 and win regularly but there are a lot of traps to avoid.

Well the sodium opening is pretty bad tho..

I vote for 1. f3 (Gedult's Opening), for the reasons at the above linked thread.

It's rated next to last in popularity on 365 chess:

e3 isn't bad if you end up transposing with d4 or f4 afterwards. The other two moves are just punts that offer Black to open the game and play a tempo down but with a minor rook-pawn move already made.

White can get away with a lame move in the opening. Black is down a tempo and can't fiddle around so much.

I guess 1.h3:

Carlsen has played 1.e3 as well as 1.a3 in official games, but not this one...

U can play virtually all reversed openings with 1. h3 as well as with 1. a3.

I'd argue that 1.e4 is the worst opening move for white, but that's just personal preference....

At least, it can be shown that 1. e4 is statistically suboptimal in master databases. tongue.png

TwoMove

1.e3 is actually quite good. Some would call it quite poisonous.

STEVESMITHFAN49

1. f3 is probably the worst, especially if you play 1. f3 e5 2.g4

U mean 1. e3.

Pawn to f3 is definitely the worst. Here is why:

1. It prevents the dark-squared Knight, the light-squared Bishop, and the Queen to develop.

2. It does not control the center.

3. It endangers the King because it opens up the e1-h4 diagonal.

4. GothamChess said so

5. playing pawn g4 = GAME OVER

DrSpudnik

Even the worst move 1 for White renders the game =.

Black, being half a move down, has no time to waste and must be careful to not play nonsense.

According to most engines, and myself, it’s 1. g4, as it has all of the same problems as 1. f3 plus you’re likely to lose a pawn and screw up your structure even more.
