Chess 'n' Poker

Any poker players out there???

As you can tell by my name I love Holdem Poker and play heaps online specifically short handed limit (5 or 6 players to a table). I've tried no limit but prefer limit, I like the grind factor. Many chess players play poker like myself, it seems in a lot of instances the skills required to be good at chess are applicable to poker. Could we have a discussion on this?

I'm looking at setting up a group for poker players, I've done a search and I can't find an existing group that covers this. Anyone interested in being a part of this group or know of a group that already exists, maybe I missed it when I did the search.

I agree.  The same logical and analytic skills are used for both games, but...

The subjective parts of the game are very different.  I would like to be

Yes sir, count me in, Poker is my second love, after chess (it's very close 2nd).  In fact, I believe the skills you pick up in poker are more important in life than the skills you use in life from learning chess, you are a better man.

I absolutely love both chess and poker! They're both such good games! I find the psychology of poker fascinating and although they are extremely different games i guess there's skills that are applicable to both

Care to elaborate? Because the "skills" in poker are essentially the ability to read your opponent and a bit of statistics if you so desire which are really not that useful in life.

But to the original discussion regarding chess and poker being related, I don't think you could be farther from the truth. Chess is a game where all decisions and outcomes fall completely with the player, outside factors prolly don't account for more than 10% of your success or failure as a chess player. Poker on the other hand offers quite a bit more emphasis on outside factors. Nonetheless, I like both chess and poker (chess more), but really, how many of you would argue more than 50% of success at poker comes from the skill of the individual player? You might as well compare chess to Monopoly!

I have been playing poker for 3 years mainly on pokerstars but a bit on some other sites too especially NL hold em . Would love to be part of such a group!

pokerstars here.  Started way back when Party Poker was big.  Played a little on UB and AP, then found they were cheater sites.  Now, it's pokerstars only.  Low limit grinder.  Take shots at the bigger once in while though.  Gotta make a living somehow.

I play poker for a living. I played on Paradise and Party years ago, but of course they are closed to americans now. I have accounts on Cake (which is very soft), and Full Tilt and PokerStars, but I play almost exclusively on PokerStars now (I am Supernova) and their rakeback is great. I live in Vegas and play live cash games in the casinos (mostly Venetian, Bellagio and Wynn) $5-10 NL or $10-20 NL. But I also play about 35 hours/week online. Alot of the best holdem players in tournaments come from a chess background. Dan Harrington, Howard Lederer, Alan Goehring, Dennis Waterman etc. I'd like to be in your group when you start it also.

In the end, we all get the same cards.  It's simple math.  If someone wins consintently over time, it is due to skill and more than the exact even chance that our cards are going to be better or worse than the next guys.  So I do think that the skill set you aquire at poker (betting straregy, reading tells, reading other's betting habits, knowing the odds and reading the up cards etc.) does count towards a better than average win percentage.  At any given session, you may get great cards and come away a big winner.  You also might get garbage and lose up to your predetermined amount of acceptable losses.  Therefore, I would argue that over the long run, 100% of success is up to the player.

I'm a much better poker player than I am chess player. I do feel, however, that the poker skill-set requires quite a bit less general memorization than does chess. There are only a handful of statistics and facts that are useful to memorize in poker while the majority of situations where any mathematical decisions are necessary are simple to calculate on the spot.

Also, it's easy enough to play a game for play money, however it's quite tough to arrange a good situation for US players due to sites that overreacted to the federal laws passed a few years ago and quit serving this demographic.

No I am not going to elaborate, do your own research.  Even if it turns out that you are correct, still, my opinion is the one I previously posted.
