Greatest Chess Master in History

@jazis: Yeah, I don't think most Americans here who voted for Morphy or Fischer did so just because of national origin. Hell, I would never vote for Fischer because he was an American! He was a despicable human being who hated my country. He rejoiced on 9-11.

Champion for the next 50 years ― until he's 77 years old? Good grief, man! My guess is that Carlsen won't be champion 10 years from now. The competition at the top is just too tough today for a player to hold onto the championship for decades.

The problem with post-Kasparov champions is that they’re all pretty much the same.  None has a distinct style that makes them stand apart from the rest.  Every game is 30 moves in before they break from the opening theory each of them has memorized.  There’s nothing romantic about those games over the incredible creativity of Morphy or Tal— or even someone like Philidor or Staunton.  Carlson is the next best thing and even he must play like a computer whether he wants to or not because that’s just how it works in 2018.  Romance is dead....in chess.  The games are more intense than ever, but they’re so...mechanical these days.

Yeah indeed it's not good to compare the chess legends in themselves. However Mikhail Tal was the best.

I would like to vote for Mikhail Tal because his games are the type(you take a gun, just kick the opponent on his weak points). Aggressive. Legend. That's the reason.

Good point. I don't recall if you've voted in either poll. If not, you'll find the current standings in both below.

That's Tal's seventh nomination. Why do you think he was the best of all time?

Do you want to participate in the Carlsen-Caruana poll? If so, see below.

That's Kasparov's eighth. Why do you think he's the best of all time? And what about the Carlsen-Caruana match?

Ostap Bender deserves an honorable mention, even though his games seem to be missing from the Archives.

camter

No, sorry, he has a game Archiived which he uncharacteristically lost.

1.e4e52.Nf3Nc63.Bb5a64.Ba4Nf65.O-Ob56.Bb3Be77.Re1Bb78.c3d59.exd5Nxd510.Nxe5Nxe511.Rxe5Nf412.Bxf7+Kxf713.Rf5+Bf614.Rxf4Qd515.Rf3Rae816.d4Qh517.Rd3Re218.Be3Be419.Rd2Qg420.Qb3+Kg60-1

Unfortunately Bender did not know about space bars.

Well, you mentioned him so now he's good to go.  wink.png
