How can we encourage more women to play chess?

1) Men are simply better at chess anyway

2) There would have been a slightly smaller difference if there were no women's championships. If women get to play more against strong players, the improvement would have gone faster.

this is not true  I think the problem with there being fairly few good female chess players, is that there is just less women who are really invested in chess like male chess players are.

Someone challenged me yesterday. We'd never had a game. I looked at his Profile and he had over 50 Friends. ALL of them women, NONE of them men. What am I supposed to think about that? And that isn't unusual, it happens regularly. Anyway, everybody have a great weekend.

funny because there are plenty of female profiles here with all male friends but nobody finds that weird. if anything, those female members are praised for choosing to enter a male dominated environment and they actually never stop receiving compliments and favours. chess playing guys are usually not successful with the opposite gender so they try to use this game as an ice-breaker of sorts to help them talk to women. why is that so difficult to understand? they are usually stereotypically nice guys who would never take advantage of a woman or harass her in any way. maybe if women stopped feeling so threatened by everything than they could be more at peace with themselves.

I know 91 women who play chess.  I only know three men who play chess.  It is probable that only online chess, and perhaps only on this website, is male dominated alongside the highest tier of chess.   The vast majority of chess players might very well be women.

I'm not doubting you but if you ever visit a chess club or OTB tournament, you will notice that usually around 90% of the players are males (of all ages). Of the remaining 10%, most of the females are under the age of 13. Teenage and adult females, for whatever reason, are just not as interested in playing chess at clubs and tournaments as much as males are. Perhaps it's true that plenty of females do play chess but they tend to do it online and not in real life.

maybe you're right but that means they prefer to play with their friends and family and not at clubs or tournaments, meaning that the women you know are more casual players than competitive players. nothing wrong with it but all I'm saying is there must be a reason for that.

Which one of two points is not true?

It is true. In general, men do have sharper brains, and women have stronger heart. For example, I've never heard of a women who died from heart attack. They also get pregnant and make birth to children. So they can stand more than men. But on the other hand, if men are not stronger at chess and smarter, why does FIDE lower the women titles for 200 rating points?

Don't forget that you live in a world that men created. When the world championship started in 1896 it was men who considered unimaginable women to play chess. Even today , it's usually either the father or the coach that decides that the girl won't play in the open section and they are usually both men that try to satisfy their ambitions totally ignoring the girls best interests.

If men were that clever this world wouldn't be a mess. This world is the  creation of their sharper brains, do you like it?

I do  not see the need to encourage women to play chess? If they want to do this--they will do this.

Women are in many ways smarter than men. This does not mean they are equal or better than men

in chess. Yes. give them the 200 point incentive--their brains are wired differently than the lame brains of men.

Our world is a mess due to men. Look at the United States for one example.

Really? You seriously need general knowledge about health.

I actually agree that women are stronger because they live longer than men.

Hi Ponz.  It looks like we finally agree on something. I also dont see any need to encourage certain people to play chess. It's just a game that some people like, and other people dont. Those that want to play will, and those that dont, wont.  But I wouldn't say the world is a mess necessarily due to men. In many ways the world is better than it's ever been, just as in many ways the US is better than it's ever been. Economic prosperity, womens rights, quality of life, life expectancy, etc. I dont know if it because of men or women or both, but today is a great day to be a woman in the US.

World a mess due to men? Which genders done the most for humanity in history?

Women gave birth, cooked, cleaned, and took care of the children so that their husbands could become farmers to provide for a village, build roads and bridges so that cities could be formed, go off to fight in wars to protect their country, and invent everything that we know today as modern cultural and scientific developments.

I adore it.

Kids are dying from hunger. If you had the bad luck to be born in Sudan you wouldn't even have water.

Is this what you adore?

Well ,it's sad that you are one more typical case of uneducated kid that knows nothing else except chess , Harry Potter and pokemon.

Batgirl actually summed it up pretty well.

By the way, I am one of the best students in my country, especially at mathematics and physics. Much more educated than most of American morons who are as old as I am. I feel a bit bad for posting this because it sounds like bragging, but you made me say it by calling me out for being uneducated. I hope you will become a superior politician and put women to lead the countries. We will se if the situation in Sudan will be any different.

Don't worry , you are not bragging , quite the opposite.

Education and culture is a much more wider subject than having a good grade in mathematics and physics.

Obviously you are among the European morons that don't know that.
