Quick someone get the residental biologist
if magnus carlsen married hou yifan would the kids be gms also?
i think magnus should marry hou then we'll know for sure. Its not like it never happens that chess talent gets inherited, magnus'es father is a chess expert.
The question is does ANYTHING get inherited??
do famous master basketball players have master basketball kids?
do computer wizzes have computer wiz kids?
do mathematicians have mathematician kids (euclid the second)?
I think the situation is called "recession towards the mean" or something along those lines. The kids would be above average, but not nearly to the extent of the parents.
do mathematicians have mathematician kids (euclid the second)?
Known examples, out of my head, are the Bernoulli family; Andrey Markov Sr., his brother Vladimir and son Andrey Jr. Though children of genii seldom match their greatness, children of university math professors very often become at least assistant professors in math.
Becoming a professor doesn't require a lot of natural talent, just strong motivation and hard work. And it's natural for children to get interested in what their parents do, especially if they talk openly and proudly about their jobs.
Fwiw, students of math (most female ones and the top quarter of male ones) tend to marry their colleagues... that's because no one else can understand them
I'm pretty sure Magnus is asexual and celibate.
Asexuality doesn't stop from having children. One only has to have sex (not enjoyable, but still bearable as it serves the purpose) a few times for that. Theoretically, even celibacy doesn't, with the advent of in vitro fertilisation.
ok so maybe math is inheretable but still its rare too inherit math(but theres been much more math geniuses throughout history than chess) and the same goes for chess rare but possible, (the odds would be greatly increased if two super gms marry each other which has never happened yet) off the top of my head is the polgar family.
I graduated from the best math faculty of Russia, and I don't have enough fingers to count professors' children (daughters too!) who were studying there. Of course not all of them became pro mathematicians, but even graduation requires a lot more effort than most people never put into education.
yeah but when i say mathematician i mean genius mathematicians like euclid, brahmagupta, archimedes and andrew wiles. Not just any mathematician
The difference between a super-GM and just a GM is as big as between a great mathematician and a professor. The question was whether children of super-GMs are likely to become at least mere GMs... I still think that, with both parents acting as coaches, they can, and the Polgar family experiment confirms this belief.
But the fact that she already has children from another man is already something!
It was Garry who missed his chance. Alas he was at odds with her: first neglected her ability ("She has fantastic chess talent", said Kasparov, "but she is, after all, a woman. It all comes down to the imperfections of the feminine psyche. No woman can sustain a prolonged battle."), then broke the touch-move rule at Linares'94 vs her, killing the prospect of a romantic affair.
Their 13-year difference is also big, but it's more bearable when it's the woman who's younger.

Depends on how you define celibacy.
even better
14 year age difference is nothing
But the fact that Judit is already married is, well, something.
Not sure about maths but music is often enough thought to run in families. As chess, music and maths share some sort of relationship (being the three subjects in which child prodigies appear) it may well be that chess could run in a family.
Seems a bit dull though. The kids might like to try something different. Engine driving, deep sea diving and being an astronaut are all popular. I always wanted to be a butler.
Hmm maybe the objective way to answer your question is by verifying whether other GM parents (already married in real life) already produce children who reach GM title as well. GM Grischuk and GM Zhukova have one daughter so far i know, and let's see whether she will reach GM status as her parents had. GM Pia Cramling and GM Bellon also have daughter that starts play chess. In my personal opinion, GM parents most likely inherit natural chess ability to their children, but the fact whether their children can reach super GM status is another thing. To be a super GM, natural chess talent only help but it needs obsessive passion of hard work from their children as well, and what kind of chess education that they receive in their early age. Having super GM parents doesnt guarantee the parents have the ability to teach their children in the most effective way. So apart from chess gene, i think strong obessive passion and the kind of chess traning that the child receives from an early age also matter most.
are chess masters kids sometimes chessmasters, i have never heard of a kasparov junior are a tal the second...
