Must Confess. I Really Enjoy Watching Women's Chess

SeniorPatzer

I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I do, but it just recently came about. I don't watch a lot of chess streaming, but every once in a while I will. And a year or so ago I watched a few rounds of Jennifer Yu winning the U.S. Women's Chess Championship. And it was REALLY exciting.

Then I watched the Rapid/Blitz portion of the Women's World Championship earlier this year between Defending Champion Ju WenJu and Goryachkina. Oh my goodness, what incredible drama. Goryachkina had to win the very last classical game to send the Championship into TieBreaks and she did!!! Then the Rapid tiebreaker was super intense too. Oh man, that was fun to watch.

Then yesterday I caught a lot of the Cairns Cup. And all the games were decisive! Carissa Yip got her 1st victory!

I'm trying to figure out why it's so enjoyable watching women's chess, and I think it's because they're at the 2450-2600 level. And the games are more decisive and less drawish. Plus these women are out for blood. They really want to win. No short draws. And, they frequently get into time trouble. Which makes it quite intense and exciting.

Elite men's chess at the 2700+ and 2800 level is very good too (Obviously, duh) BUT it just doesn't have the drama as the women. Of course, I'm a lowly patzer so what do I know. But for what it's worth, top-level women's chess is pretty fun.

Agree or Disagree? Please share your thoughts.

Agree!! If it's good and enjoyable chess, I don't care who plays it!!😁👍

kamalakanta

I agree...at the very top level, it gets too technical.....

SeniorPatzer

Thanks guys.  It's why I don't have a problem or issue with women's only events.

I do totally understand Judit Polgar and Hou Yi Fan refusing to get boxed into being considered a female chess player, and wanting to be known as a chess player, period.

But most women chess players aren't like them.

I enjoy watching them play. More mistakes then seeing if they can take advantage of the mistakes.  The Women's World Championship was very exciting, especially the second half.  I've only followed the results of the Cairns Cup(and clicked through some of the games), but the games look like they would be fun to watch.  Anna Rudolf's banter blitz is one of my favorites in that format.

This is like saying you would rather watch little league baseball than the MLB. Or your high school boys basketball than NBA or even college. High school football over NCAA or NFL.

Women sports regularly get beaten by boys.

By children.

The USA women soccer Olympic team and the Olympic basketball team practice against TEENAGE HIGHSCHOOL BOYS.

That is the level of man on their same competition level.

They also regularly lose those exhibition in practice for Olympics.

Its nice you enjoy watching some losers play.

Hey you can watch me play if you like watching trash like WGMs

kamalakanta

Sometimes Carlsen plays like a girl.......

Who wouldn't?  Those are actually fun.  Pro sports is fun for wannabes who:

- Don't play sports themselves

- Don't have any friends or family that play sports, either

I guess there are also dude-bros that watch pro sports to be cool in front of their peers.  It's a pretty sad demographic either way.

kamalakanta

Kasparov could also play like a girl......

and by the way, Topalov too....

1 girl that won a handful of times ever in the history if chess against men kind of proves the outliers

She could give you rook odds for the rest of your life and you would never win a single game wink.png.

So true....and the top women in the world could beat us all blindfolded!

Mikeyjc3

And a 15 year old boy soccer player could beat me too

Doesnt mean female sports are not still the lowest form of competition there is.

Didnt the recent chinese female wgm say literally that women cant compete with males for top in the world.

Literally one of the best women in the world said it a couple of months ago.

But yeah sure, you can think it's real entertaining Mr. WHITE KNIGHT

Do you think there are any intrinsic differences between how men and women approach chess?

I’m just speculating but I wonder whether there is a gender difference when it comes to natural intuition or feel for the game. Because to me, in all aspects of life, sometimes women and men tend to see the same thing from completely different perspectives, and that also comes into chess. I suspect that the male perspective on chess favors men, perhaps when it comes to the emotional aspect of the game and making practical and objective decisions. To put it simplistically, I think male players tend to have a kind of overview or strategy for the whole game, rather than focusing too much attention on one part of the game. It could be interesting to explore this further. I need to do more research to answer this properly!

Shirov could also play "like a girl".....

Chess.com: Do you think that a female player could become world champion in the future?

Hou Yifan: Theoretically, there should be a possibility that a woman can compete for the title in the future, but practically I think that the chances of this happening in the next few decades are very small. I do think the average rating of female players could improve, but the gap between the top women right now and the players competing for the world title is really quite large. But if you look at any sport, it's hard to imagine girls competing at the same level as men.

kamalakanta

So? They still play much better than you or I, and there is much to be learned from them.

Mikeyjc3

So does 12 year old boys soccer.

Doesnt mean that I want to go watch the elementary school practice when I can watch the World Cup.

But I guess some idiots do

SeniorPatzer

Mikeyjc3,

My Original Post was not saying that Top Women's Chess is at the same level of Precise Play and Accuracy as the Top Men.  A look at the ELO ratings would establish that.

But what I am saying is that it's enjoyable to watch.  And I still learn quite a bit as I watch and listen to the commentators:  Yasser, Jennifer Shahade, and Alejandro.
