Bobby hated the idea that someone else might make money off him, even if he himself stood to profit nicely from the deal. He gave up a lot of money because of that temprament. During his heyday, and especially right after his championship match with Spassky, he had so much potential money coming at him in the form of sponsorships. He could have lived like a king instead of a pauper. I think even Cadillac wanted him to do some commercials for them.

Even if he had just stuck to chess related stuff he probably could have done nicely from writing books alone. As it, however, GM Larry Evans, who was probably as close to Bobby as anyone could be, had to basically plead with him to get him to get My 60 Memorable Games published.

--- Thanks for the new posts.

Darth_Algar: I remenber reading that after the WC match in Iceland Fischer's lawyer had several very well-paying contracts in his office ready to sign but Fischer would not do it. This of course would lead right to that mess years later in Yugoslavia. When they offered Fischer the " Re-match " against Spassky with a big payday Fischer thought that he needed the money and playing that match in Yugoslavia of course created his legal problems with the USA government.

The other day I was looking thru an old yearbook here ( Britannica - Events of 1971 ) and I came across a very interesting quote from Bobby Fischer: " I'm tired of being the unofficial champion. I should have been world champion ten years ago. " One thing for sure, he was not too shy or too modest. Of course he did come thru with his boast and take the World title.

Another interesting fact that is mentioned in the old yearbook is that Fischer beat Petrosian 6 & 1/2 to 2 & 1/2 in that year's candidates matches. Of course Tigran Petrosian was no run-of-the-mill GM having been World Champ himself at one time.

When I signed onto Chess.com a few minutes ago I saw the small ad for the Fischer film. It will be released in NY and LA on Sept 16th and then into wider release on Sept 18th. One thing written in the ad is: " In 1972 the Cold War was fought on a Chess Board " .  Well it was a lot like the older Westerns I would say with the USSR Gang ( having government help ) against the Lone Ranger ( that being Bobby of course ).

Fischer had also beaten Petrosian, 3-1 (2w 2d) when they played second board in the USSR vs the World match, in 1970.  Fischer was coming off nearly two years of no serious international play.

It seems that a number of people do not like the new Fischer film and few are rushing to go out to see it. Perhaps it will do better when they release it on dvds, after all people who play Chess might like a copy of that movie ?

Just saw a thead on this film by Denverhigh, he does not seem to like it either. Things are starting to look kinda bad for that movie as they can't get people into the theaters to see it and it is being pulled out of the movie-houses.

Well to be fair a big part of that is the fact that the studio did not book it out to very many theaters, didn't book it for more than a few days, and did little to promote it. It's not really being pulled from theaters, it just wasn't booked for much of a theatrical run to begin with. They might as well have made it a straight-to-video release. The reason big Hollywood blockbusters are big Hollywood blockbusters is because the studios book those movies in every theater out there and give them advertising budgets larger than the GDP of some countries. That's not to say that 'Pawn Sacrifice' would have been a big Hollywood blockbuster, but it certainly could have done better if the studio had done more with it. Tobey McGuire's name alone would have drawn fair numbers. If anyone actually knew the film existed that is.

Thanks for the info Darth_Alger, you make some good points. The first film that I saw Toby McGuire in was " Wonder Boys " and I was quite surprised at how good the young fellow was. Like you said his name should have created some interest in the Fischer movie.

A few days ago I heard that the new movie about Steve Jobs is not doing very well either. I guess that Fischer is not the only fellow that people are bored with.
