@jumpbrowe FishEyedFools has shown that you are a hypocrite. People like you are a disgrace to the chess community. Learn some manners, please.
You mean like this game, where you resigned after hanging your queen?

I sometimes give up even without any material disadvantages when it's clear that I'm hopeless. I play on when I feel that maybe I could do something... :-)
It's not completely related to the material situation - more to the overall picture.
You get a better sense of it as your knowledge of the game progresses.
Generally when you're depressed, out of ideas and the clock is ticking - resignation is OK. You can always start a new game.
If you do have some time, you can afford to spend a minute or two and let the bad feelings from being in a lost position cool off - then look for chances.
Sometimes there are no chances - but you're not sure that the OPPONENT knows what to do, and think that he might to wrong himself even if in YOUR eyes he is easily winning...
If for any reason none of this applies - resignation is OK again.
But that game I posted was just so cool! And by accident, it happened on the day just before you posted :-)
Sometimes there's even another resource when you play on when down a queen.
Your resource is the opponent.
The opponent is offended! How dare you play on?! How come you don't respect it that he's such a wonderful player!
What, you don't trust that he can beat you with an extra queen?
Sometimes they get all heady and start doing weird things. They sacrifice back some of the material without any gain, "to show you that they can beat you anyway", giving you chances.
Sometimes they will blunder back the queen AFTER you collected a bit of material...
Sometimes they are mad at themselves for not beating you FASTER, consume time on the clock and die - or blunder more...
Just staying on the board down a queen, knowing that you're going to lose but keeping a level head can work wonders against the right type of opponent - or against anybody, on their "bad day".
You can make it a bad day for them :-)
