Paul Morphy did not have coaches, seconds, computer software and access to thousands of modern chess books; what if he did? His ELO might have exceeded 4000

I'm sure Paul Morphy enjoyed that this was true in his time, since it allowed him to be unique. Unlike many people, he could achieve victory through pure thought, which was what chess was about originally. Now it's about memorizing all sorts of computer lines that at the time were all unexplored territory, and the outcome of games between masters was a contest of creativity and not computer preparation. It was perhaps nice way back in the day when you couldn't get an instant evaluation of a position, and when the only way to make a good decision was to think. It was certainly curious for all those people who Morphy crushed despite giving them odds, especially when they didn't know what they did wrong, because not even their odds could save them from Morphy's pure intelligence, innovation, and creativity.

Yes, that is why Bobby Fischer said he hated chess

why?

Bobby Fischer said he hated chess in one of his interviews which you can also watch on youtube because chess has become a memorised game and creativity and talent are being suffocated by book knowledge.

He was, but I definitely see his point.

I also would like to mention another great English grandmaster Mark Hebden. Mark is a great positional player with amazing endgame knowledge. He is very friendly over the board and analyses the game with his opponent with his great sense of humour. Mark read this and admit you are a great player.

I think the best player in the history is Bobby Fischer . I respect Tal , Kasparov ,Alekhine Lasker ,Capablanca ,Carlsen but Fischer something else

As a Norwegian I am "forced" to say Magnus Carlsen.

He's brutally honest and cares not about what other people think, he does what he wants and I like that.

Taffa64

Vesalin Topalov. He always plays sharp entertaining chess. He has spectacular wins vs the best players of all times ( Kasparov, Kramnik..etc) . I really like his style of play.
