Its not chess players, it is the fact that people in general on the internet are more rude and say things they wouldn't in person. The anonymous nature of the internet games leads to it. Get used to it if you are going to play games online - not just chess.

It's the Internet jerks and sore losers a dime a dozen.
I agree with Extractor. Some people will start insulting me only by the flag... i really don't mind that much as it shows they're lacking the minimum respect-education, but it's always nicer to play someone friendly.
Have some good games out there!
Some people are just plain nasty, some are rude because they are uneducated. However, I can't say that anyone has been rude to me on this site. Time will tell. 
It is the Internet not just chess players. Many chess players you meet in person are very nice and generally polite.

Education has very little to do with manners.
It takes a gentleman to gracefully lose a game. A lot of people simply can not cope with the tension inherent to chess.The adrenaline rush makes them incapable to react normally. Watch the rapid game between Kortchnoi and Polgar : Victor really bullied her after his loss.
I use the chat feature and out of about 15 games where we chated had only 1 person be rude. He was banned for using 4 letter words, etc. Every one else has been very polite. I always say good game afterward, win or lose. Player's from all over the world on here. Let's show some respect for each other. Thanks.

There's no shortage of jerks. But why whine about it? Just play chess, and get better.
Nothing beats like success. Improvement counts too. 
I don't find chess players rude in general compared to say Canadians ,Judoka and Jehova's witnesses

Most of the rude persons are not chess players. I have given 2 trophies to my opponents to show my gratitude. And asked them to send back. They never do.
I always send back trophies.
Anyway, I stop sending and only sending back trophies.
There are some nice chess players on chess.com. You just have to find them.
