but there are hundreds chess modifications and millions and millions of other board games...

There are indeed at least hundreds of chess variants, but only a small few are carefully thought-out, perfectly balanced, logical evolutions of chess. Gothic Chess is one of those few and is for that reason worth devoting a little, and perhaps even more than a little, time to.
