Do men player longer when losing to females?

Obviously I'm not talking about "you" personally.

Of course not :-)

But do you think that men try harder against women, or play longer in obviously lost positions when they can't win on time?

I've had a couple of games like that today so I just wondered if there had been any stats about it.

Anyway, hello from London (where it's raining).

Hello Kay. All the leaders in your country are women. So Ha!

i don't care about them

During a 1980s scholastic tournament, I was paired against a girl, and took so long to think that she was beating.  After a friend finished his game, I borrowed his clock and placed it at our board with 120 minutes for each side.  She lost on time.  It wasn't her gender that made me fight harder, it was that she used so much time that I was becoming stir crazy.

I think most people would agree that men are perceived as being more merciless

That would probably be a misconception. While men tend to be more hot-tempered, women do very well in cold-blooded ruthlessness.

Back in the 70's and 80's police psychologists did vast amount of analysis on the matter due to the threat of the mixed gender terrorist group RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army_Faction .

One of the points they brought up was the cultural instinct men have to protect women, while the same does not exist equally the other way around.

The analysis got quite some publicity because due to it the Anti-Terror Units of the police were advised to shoot the female members first if a confrontation was about to escalate into a gunfight.

The psychologists expected the women to be able to overcome any natural inhibition against harming others faster and act more cold-blooded and ruthless than the men.

I would be very disappointed to find that this was true.

I think it would be a disservice to both genders to speculate something of this nature would affect a game...

However, maybe female players are rare enough that men find them more challenging to play against? wink.png

Hello from Madrid, where is hot and dry as hell.

Pulpofeira

At least there are different levels there, or so I've been told.  :P

I'm from England but in California at the moment and it's pretty hot as hell this summer.

Although I spent a summer in Edinburgh a few years ago and it rained 97% of the time... at least in London we get some warm, dry days!

Pulpofeira

You could get fed up of that, believe me.

Beautiful in Seattle!!! Low 80's with a mild ocean breeze....

And yes, a good majority of men plays it to the end. Even it's 1-2 force mate is inevitable, I wait for them to resign but they still hope I blunder, offer them draw or I resign....which I have. Lol.🤡

On this site it is normally difficult to figure out if anyone is female anyway, at least during live chess. Personally I usually resign against players who are in a better position than me no matter if I believe they're women or men, since I don't take being good at chess that seriously. However, I can see that sometimes guys might feel more pressured to win, if they're playing against a woman.

Of course I can ask the same question the other way around: Do you think women feel it is a matter of personal pride to win against men, and would that compel them to not give up as quickly as if they were playing against a female opponent?

Leave kaynight alone.

@flumculus, personally speaking, no I don't take personal pride in winning against men. I'm a competitive person but I think generally speaking, we are less of that. Only when I'm thrashed talked is when I play to the end. Normally I would resign.

Hello Marvin (flumculus)

I agree with Isabela and it's also cos we play guys almost all of the time but you dn't the other way around (sorry that got away frm me but you know what I mean). Bit like left-handers and right-handers in tennis I suppose.
